ewa beach late 60's

aloha witam, are you boz son of the “bull”??? or another boz…

aloha ike

Howzit Cleigh.  I see more people talking about the get together this summer.  I have a suggestion  for the location.  As I am retired military, I can try and secure some cabanas at White Plains Beach aka Officers Beach, Barbers Point.  Good side to this is that there's plenty of parking, relatively easy to find, bathroom and shower facilities, can barbeque.  You know the location, you've been there many times before.  I'll see if I can get the cost for cabanas and check the availability for the September time frame.  Most of us are from Ewa Beach anyway so this should work out.  Best part is that September means South Swells so bring your boards.  But no worry, if humbug to bring your boards, I get for you.  Anyway, let me know what you think.  This is just a suggestion.  The sooner we get a consensus on this, the easier it wil be to lock in a date.  Looking at Sat, 15 Sep or Sun 16 Sep 2012.  Aloha, Mike  Ps...My cell number is 392-7072.  Call me anytime.

It was a beautiful, sunny, kona wind day for Kevin Johns Memorial Gathering at Baldwin Beach Park…Nathan and Cleigh did a great job at organizing the gathering…food ,drink and conversation flowed for hours…the paddle out into the clean blue ocean to scatter flowers was truly  a wonder to behold…Kevin was smiling and all his friends gave him the best farewell any surfer could hope for…for me the final gift of this wonderful day was to share a good surf session with Cyrus Munroe and Stanley “Savage” Parks at a secret left peak…just 3 of us goofy foots trading waves, laughing and hooting like in the 60ʻs…this one was for you Kevy!!!..Aloha Ke  Hoa!!!

Yea that’s me the 2 giri giri bozu from E.B. Man I haven’t seen you in like 15-20 years? Last month I had a get together bash at my house when Darwin was visiting. The timing of his visit was perfect as Oren was also in town. It was good to see and talk story with some of the guys I grew up with, the over 60 makules. His brother Alan, Dave Murakami, Ken Ikehara, Gordon Narusawa we started and 12 noon and partied till like 9 at night.

I’m glad I found this blog. Reading all these stories brings back alot of fond memories of growing up in Ewa Beach. Remember when there was no shopping center or leeward Estates only Kiawe trees on both sides of Ft Weaver? Things have changed over the years but the good times we had in the 60’s —  Priceless!

Mike. Terrific! Unless someone can up with something better I believe its a go. O beach is good. I’ll be touch soon.

Shootz!  I'll start spreading the word.  I think Sunday, 16 Sep 2012 would be a good day as maybe folks work on Saturday.  I'll start getting information on the Cabana at O beach.  Talk later, Aloha, Mike

aloha Boz,  looks like a fun party… who’s the bolo head guy with the gotee, is that Darwin or Sid Matsufuru… i have’nt seen either of them for nearly 40 years… wow make me sound old, maybe at at least 45…there was a bunch of the ‘hau bush’ crew there…for those who don’t know this was the kepani crew from Ewa Plantation Japanese Camp… Oren Murakami who was my roomate for a year in collage…he is responsiable for bending my mind… i’m glad he did…Oren’s ohana owned the Honouliuli Shokai, which is the long store on Fort Weaver Road between Kahua Ranch and Rudy’s Bar in Honouliuli…then there are the Matsushima brothers Alan and Darwin who moved to Ewa Beach between Pohakupuna and Pupu st.  Arnold Yoshioka, Gordon Narusawa…others are from Ewa Beach Wilton Itamoto who lived on the entrance of Ewa Beach Road, from the family of baseball stars, father “BULL” ,brothers Dickie, Wayne, Jimmy, and Wilton “BOZ”…eh Boz it was your short board that you made and Jimmy Nino’s 5’-4" that he made that got me inspired to go short short, sub 6 foot… and we can’t forget Dave Murakami who was a charger life guard at Makaha with Uncle Buff…and one more guy that i use to surf with was Ken Ikehara, we were buds for a while and not because he had the cutest sisters Jean and Terry.  they live half a block from me off of Papipi Road… sorry for not mentioning any of the girls in the photos,  i’m not sure  who they are… and no i’m not gay…Les Bise, i don’t mean to not mention you but i don’t see you since you taking the photos, mahalos for doing that,  now i can visualize you guys in real time…to bad i no moe pictures on me… you mite not recognize me, 225 all gray and half bald…

Sorry to hear this news. RIP to another of the legends. Makes us all realize how precious life is. Every moment counts. His comment on Kevin's memorial was obviously from the heart.

Sharing a few pictures from Kevin's paddle-out that were sent to me by Kevin's niece. Aloha from Ubud...

Buzzy is da man,a legend.surfing, outrigger canoe surfing, paragliding, hanggliding, kite surfing, shaping his boards, playing hawaiian slack key guitar and speaking Hawaiian, you name,he would tackle it with gusto and be good at it. Larger than life.He went out the way he lived,we should all be so lucky. He was doing a downwind run on his outrigger canoe from Maliko to Kahului harbor. The wind was gusting to 40mph,the way he liked it,he was getting some good long rides, flying the ama.His heart gave out while he was riding the waves and wind, with majestic Haleakala above.God bless you my friend,a hui hou kaua, kaumaha wau, aloha e.Ari’ihere

Regarding the interview with Buzzy, it was a real pleasure doing it. One of the most memorable aspects was that Buzzy really wanted to acknowledge his peers and family. While the interview was about him he wanted it to be about others as well.

I saw Ralph Palmeira a couple of weeks ago, and told him about the gathering. I also told Barry Morrison, who lived at Iriquois Pt during the early 60s. He owns the Inter-island surfboards company now. He wants to come as well.

Great! Mike did call me last week so we are all good. And yes they plan on being there. Anyone know someone that is willing to video tape all this? Would be historic. Please contact your group of guys cause at some point we need to plan for food and drinks so head counts will be necessary.
