ewa beach late 60's

Shrinking allas days: I used to go to country a lot with Steve Kendall. As most of us guys know that was around the Kendalls, Kendall was fearless, or crazy, or maybe both! But he'd paddle out in just about anything, no matter. One night, Mike Kendell, Steve and I drove to country  witth our boards and slept in the car at Laniakea so we could be the 1st ones out. Just before sunrise, we could see Laniakea was completely closed out with a NW swell, from Papailoas to Jock's Rocks and Chun's. So we drove toward sunset, but Sunset was super huge. No way could we get out on our boards; I had my 6'7" BK. So decided to go to Velseyland. No one out, but we wateched for a while and it looked make-able, so we paddled out, and out, and out. Seems we never could get to the outside, and it keep getting bigger and sloppier. By the time we did it was like a 15' washing machine and we were like a mile off shore . I think Mike was the 1st one to take off. Real bumpy and hairball. I think he caught one more wave and went in. Steve caught a wave and he went in. I paddled around tring to drop in but my board was too small. I finally did catch an outside set wave; was either catch it, or try and get under, which would have been impossible. It would have been a long swim (no leaches in those days). Days that you never forget!

Thanks Mike! Yes, from one of the biggest- bodinki hair guys in Ewa Beach to bolohead! Ha! Eh, but hair is over rated anyway (if you're bolohead :-)

Jan Sojot is going to try and get another pavilion this weekend. Hopefull we can get 2 side by side. Mike B

As far as judging the size of waves, the National Weather Service, and the local news use a “mainland” scale to measure waves and Surfnewsnetwork for instance uses a “hawaiian” scale to measure waves. I think it’s got something to do with liability. If a tourist hears it’s 4 to 8 feet, to locals it’s really only 2 to 4 feet; half the size of what they would call it. On the mainland they call their waves twice as big as us unless they’ve surfed over here for a long period of time. I always hear “tourist” surfers calling it their “mainland” size in the parking lot at the beach or in the water and laugh to myself. The bouy reports during the winter are true indicators. Once I hear that a NW swell is hitting bouy 1 at say 8’ 14 seconds at say around 1 or 2 AM then I call Butch and we know that mostly likely we can dawn patrol ‘cause it’ll be 8’ “hawaiian” by say 6:30 AM.

I wish all of us could surf some really good waves together. There’s good surf spots down toward Kaena Pt by the beach park out there; but then again, even those spots are becoming regular surf spots too; that’s how crowded its gotten during the wintertime. Plus the wind conditions have to be different that the 7 mile miracle surf spots.

I hope this note finds all of you in good health and spirit.

Eh Tommy, if your girlfriend Lisa when grad in 1977 then that must be the same girl. I don’t remember where she was from, but she was best friends with Mark Kahalekulu’s girl friend and eventually wife Linda. They broke up and Tom O’Reilly married her. Tom and Linda are still together. Linda was from Pearl City area. Linda’s brother Les married my cousin. Her grandfather is uncle Willy, Sonny Cordes and my grandmother’s brother.

Those girls really liked to “have fun”.

Hey Everyone,

Did anyone ever wonder why Essex Road is closed?  Making it impossible to access the beach?  1998 Barber's Point was turned over to the state.  Civilians have access to all areas of Kalaeloa accept for the military housing area.

I recently found out, that the military closed Essex Road and had the community take a longer route to Nimitz Beach, due to liabilty of having no netting erected, to prevent golfballs from hitting cars, people, etc.

Funny how other golf courses only have netting for driving range area.  Check it out, Ko Olina Golf course does not have netting and this course is right off the roadway.  Waialae Golf Course has no netting and the road leading to Kahala Hotel is right next to the golf course.

Could it be that the military closed the road to keep locals from using that road because they do not want us on it while they golf?  Yet, locals can enter that entrance through walking or biking in?

Essex Road is a public road, but the military had erected a wall and gate to prevent cars from using that road.  Yet, golfers can use it to access the golf course?  What is wrong with this picture?

Descrimination?  Seems like only one group of people can have the convenience of using this road.  While us tax payers must take a longer round about way to enter Nimitz Beach.

Contacted Will Espero, who represents out community.  He claims he pursued this issue, but did not do anything about it.  He also claims that they are making another road for the community to use in the future, through Ocean Point?  Seems like Wil does not want to do whats right and open the road for the community and let us decide which road to take?  Military has no right closing this road off to the community entering with their cars?

Will be having a follow-up meeting with Wil Espero to see what we can do to open this road again for all people in our community.  This is our right and our duty to stand up and be heard.

For 14 years, this road has been closed to the public.  We need to take this road back!

If you feel this is the right thing to do, call Senator Will Espero 586-6360, and be heard!

T.Phillips- I’ve always remembered you as have my 2 brothers. I know you and I went surfing many a time in 70 and 71. You were a great “Pale” then and always Even if I get there Tommy, I will still need someone to pick us up and maybe stay 1 night! It’ll cost plenty kala bra. But i’ll try very hard! Thank’s to all the great guys that have written to me and my brothers in here, we have never forgot about our EwaBeach days.I will talk story today with Lance and try with Chris. Chris has no phone so he’s hard to get a hold of. Both of our parents are gone now. And the house they bought new in 71 has been repoed. by the bank. I’ll look on here every day now that I know you fellas are on hear. Troy Mize  p.s. Much thank’s again to the guys thar have written back on here. Mahalo

I talked to my brother Chris today. He remembers that day you fellas went to Swabbyland in the Green Bug and listened to Crosby,Stills&Nash! The owner and driver of the green Bug was Chris Evans! Tom Woolley lived with the Evans family until he moved back to Cal. Chris was an extremely polite and wonderful guy and surfer! Tom Wooley was probably the best of our bunch on Longboards and was built like Hercules, but again Tom was a gentle giant. Tom and I (Troy Mize) surfed alone at sunset beach in Feb. of 68, nobody else was out. 6 to 9 foot waves, I remember a guy taking still 35 mm phot’s of us. We later got them but they are long gone now. It was rare if you weren’t a super star back then to have anyone take professional photos of surfers. So I hope this info solves the green bug question!! I had a red vw bug (66) then. When I got home from playing music all night in town I let Lance and Chris take the red bug to the surf. When I played music for a living in the Honolulu area I only surfed the very late afternoon

Tommy- Those were great days listening to C.T.A. , the Mothers of Invention etc. When were young we think we have to accomplish something great. When all along we had everything we needed right there in Ewa Beach. Except for the addition of my son Travis who is now 31. My stay here in Oregon has been a total waste of my life I have a good wife(my 4th) in Mary but I can’t talk her into going and living back in Hawaii. Pray for me Brothers, Please your Servant, Troy Mize

E Mopugs! Whats new with the military! What you all seem not to know is that all military lands belong to Kanaka Maoli ( we are now called Hawaiians since overthrow of Kingdom of HawaII). This land was illegally ceded to America/Military via President McKinley 1893-94. Discrimanatory absolutely, wrong and illegal without doubt, unrighteous definately! Now the next thing I am about to say may come as a shocker, but according to International Law Hawaii can never be a State of America. if any of you have heard of Keanu Sai (Marlene Sai is his mom) he is activitly pursuing, suits against the US regarding these things. He was a Captain in the US Army, and went on to get his Doctorate in Hawaiian/American Political Science. He recently wrote a book that depicts the truth of what happens. Listen! to get his doctorate he needed to face a panel of scholars to prove his thesis wrong. Guess what they couldn’t and he was awarded his doctorate. His book, “Ua Mau ke Ea” is currently being used in UH as part of Hawaiian Politcal history, and soon to be in the High Schools too. This in its self will change many misconceptions we all or at least most of us had in our generation. Once its out, it will help usher in the change and order of things which are sure to come. Small tidbit, Hawaiian is a “Nationalty” and not a race. Everyone during the time of Kingdom of Hawaii who were born here or naturalized here were called Hawaiian. The race of people that I and many other come from are called “Kanaka Maoli”. Tahitains, “Tanata Maohi”, New Zealand natives “Tangata Maori”. I could recite countless stories of how certain elitist people, tried to take over and control Hawaii. As it is a misnomer to call true natives Hawaiians, so is it to say we are fighting for our sovereignty. Sovereignty is a God given right to all humans. We need to not misunderstand this in order to go ahead. It is “GOD” who gave us these rights and it mankind who tries to take it from us and control the rest of us all under the guise of “Da Church” I do not call them Christians or Believers because they do not follow Christ by their actions and works. please know and understand the difference. Also, the scare but if not America then who? Believe in yourselves we can and will do this. Just gotta follow GODS lead and not our own. By the way for all you who are not Kanaka Maoli, all the other races of people were allowed to live and benefit from Hawaii’s Kingdom. We were and still are our own country. Here on Maui. Molokai, Big Island, many Kanaka have won back their land because with the right documents they are winning even in the illegal courts of America. Well nuff said for now.

hey tommy phillips this is chris mize whats this I hear about get together at barbers point in sept. is it the 15th, I want to be there tell me when, whats up the last thing I heard about you were a cop, like your dad. I want to surf and you know we were the real crew , remember the time we were on detention at james cambell out painting the parking lot dividers smoking a joint then ripping shark country best days of my life........... hope I can make to the reunion   love and aloha chris                                          you can write me  mize0888@msn.com

When I was just a youngster I did NOT know or understand about the overthrow of the Hawaiian peoples, historically planet wide, the native peoples should have killed ALL light skinned “discoverers”. Any place they “discovered” was plundered, plagued and ultimately destroyed, then divided up by the “holy men”.

In my junior year at Radford in problems in democracy class, we learned of 10 men who held 110 positions with Dole, Bishop, Dillingham, etc. personally I feel for the sovereignity movement to return the chain of Hawaiian Islands to the people of Hawaii and the nation of Hawaii. I won’t see it in my life time. Hawaii opened my eyes, I was NOT the majority, but a minority, it was tough going to a town school, Kaimuki, I got smacked the first week, but because I did not “tell Teacha”, it was , “you all right Haole”. My next school was Waipahu, the kids there were country, I didn’t get so much trouble, but a lot more Aloha, these were the kids that started taking me to Ewa Beach, Hau Bush & Shark country.

Once my pop got base housing at Hickam, I went less and less to EB, but started surfing town and the North Shore, 2 years ago on Aloha Day I took my young friend Colin Herlihy to Ewa Beach, Hau Bush was blown out and while checking Shark Country, a pick up truck of the Bruddahs came by, “Haole, beat it”, I wanted to call them back, not to start trouble, hell I’m old, who I going beef wit, but for all they knew, I surfed with their grandparents, I’m no kama’aina, never going be one local, but Hawaii is deep in my heart, I respect the people, aina, all things that make Hawaii, Hawaii, it’s not the concrete, the malls or the tourist tours.

My backyard is blooming my plumerias that I grew from cutting from years ago, that is my connection that I see the first thing every morning, my piece of Hawaii, see you Buggahs soon

Greetings Surfer's from Ewa Beach. Other surfers that rode the waves, who were from Ewa Beach

were: Mike Mihalovich, Henry Arhelger, Mike Johnson, Doug Kingsley, Kenny Kohler, Nathan Moody,

Danny Thomas, Mike Bateman, Bob Hanson, Puli Tasi, and John Hamilton. These guys surfed the North

Shore as well, and made the trip out to Yokohama Bay on the big days, when Rabbit and Buffalo were

out there. Some of the Capehart Housing crew were: Mike Dorhtey, John Burky, Ski Kowalski, Glenn

Jacobs, Tom Wooley, Chris Evans, Ricky Gaynor, Ed Gerrard, Steve & Sue Bumgarner, and Robert House.

There were many more that are in my long term memory, and will come to light later on. Does anyone know

what happened to Sue Swanson. She shurely shined on, or off the beach.          Brother Naky

Hey Jim, I apologize for the local a-holes. It was never an easy place for outsiders to come down to, but I think these days with the new homes coming up a stones throw from the beach, it’s hard for those who don’t have much to feel aloha. If it weren’t for the old timers, I’d be treated as an outsider because I moved to town so many years ago.

Ewa Beach has changed so much over the last 20 years. I feel sorry for the old time locals who still live there like my mom and brother. Traffic is terrible, and the new residents are so different. But, it will always be home for me, and I have a never ending love for Haubush and Shark Country.

September 15, 2012 is going to be an amazing day.

Jim its all good! When I was younger I actually got shot at from one MP at O Beach. I was 13. Never forgot that. It shaped me for years, though I clearly knew the difference between them and my real haole friends like Paul Sheppard, Doug Kingsley, Mike and Steve Kendall, Andy Toothman, Rocka, Kevin Johns, Steve, Chris, and Mark Gardner. There were others but this is who I remember right now. Another “Olelo Hawaii” (Hawaiian lanuage) lesson. Original meaning of “Haole”= Ha, breath of Life, that which GOD breath in man (Adam) when he created mankind. “ole” no, without. Literally without the life force of GOD, Holy Spirit, Spirit of GOD. Most European Colonizers got their crew from the dungeons and prisons of that country. It was cheap labor. Haole also means white race person, in another context it describes the English language. So, depending on the context of the sentence it can mean its other variations to which there is no negative connotation.
