I had heard a story on the basis of the origin of “haole”, Captain Cook’s men nearly all wore beards and this made them have the appearance of no mouth or smile. thus the faceless ones, myself, I used the Hawaiian language phrase Ka po’e a’ea, as I am a wanderer, I would like to spend my last days back in Oahu surfing the slop on the Ewa side, unlike Barry Morrison’s, neva go Ewa, I wan go Ewa
Barry’s heart is still in Pu’uloa. I saw him recently and he said that there’s a connection between the old lady in the Titanic movie and the Parrish family of EB.
He knows how good it can get when the surf is up. But, like me, he also knows how nice the waves in Waikiki can be with the offshore winds.
I also am from the 60-70's in Ewa Beach and the gang. My partner back then was Debbie Bowers, Ralph Paing Kaliihohomalu, Lawrence Sarou, and the Owens brothers. Bobby making the Pros, the other two are not so lucky. I also did the skateboarding in the pool that became the big thing and new for the time. The Ayala brothers, the Owens and the others found this to be a great way to pass the time when the surf was down.
I remember from Ewa Beach Park the myna birds and the time we spent the time listening and harrassing the birds while enjoying the pakalolo. Man did this conversation bring back the good ol days. I'm glad there are others who remember the good Ewa, now my understanding is that it is not an area to hang out in due to the gangs and drugs. I would never have thought that it would turn out that way. Too many other areas of badness on the island to see our neighborhood ruined.
Now that I'm in Florida I really miss the good ol days........
Bother Naky-We must know each other, every guy and girl you mention I knew. Like Kay Nichols I went to Radford with her in 63 and64.Do you rember Guy Kamaka, he was a great surfer until he went army in 67,became a helicopter gunner did three tours over there .We went to see HenDrix at the Waikiki Shell in 69! Tom Wooley was my best pal, him and Chris Evans were good friends. So I think we’re really connected Brother There we’re so many great people then, there were a couple of lolo’s but they will remain nameless. Troy Mize
I surfed with Debbie, the Ayala brothers, and all the others in the mid-late 60s-70’s.
Lawrence was a friend too, I’m pretty sure we are the same age. Time has been hard on him. Not sure if he’s homeless now or not. I last saw him on the beach at Sharkcountry fishing. He didn’t look good, he said hi and I said hi back, but I didn’t reconize him, then Joey Gaynor told me it was Lawrence.
Jim! Forgot one other impotant part of all this “Haole” meaning. The malahini (newcomers) wouldn’t “Honi” touching of noses and sharing “Ha” or “Breath of Life”. Thus to Kanaka they appeared foreign or more like Aliens. Funny you should mention the phrase “Ka po’e a’ea”. One of my Kupuna use to tell me how we need to feel for those Po’e Haole because they have no root to the aina, (foundation) and are like wanderers floating in the mists. Guess he was trying to connect me with my own roots too and being grounded certainly helps. I am in now way saying you are that, just “kou mana’o” ( my thoughts) being shared. mahalo nui loa for your imput, your availability and your connection to Ewa Beach. “E Na Mamo o Puuloa, mai poina na La 'ae 'ea” " descendants of Puuloa remember to days of your youth!!. If I remember correctly you said to TP in an earlier post that you would be their “Hanai” adopted brother. If so then you are “ohana” family. E komo mai kou kaikaina! Welcome my brother!

Bother Naky- This is Troy Mize , I had many a good time surfing with Tim Gearbrandt and his brother! I mention that we we’re probably the first guys to go out to Swabbyland. I went out there in 63 with Mike Miles, Kimo Miles and Guy Kamaka a solid 8 to 10 feet! WE moved to Omaha from 64 to 66. We moved to 91-906 PapipiPlace in August of 67. I remember meeting you once then as our old friend Mark Gardner bought some thing from you then. In sept. of 67 these guys went out to Swabbyland, it was perfect just like #3’s in town. There were the Mize’s, Arhelgers, Gardners(all 3 of them, Kevin Johns, T. Phillips, Dave Ponds Dick DeLOng, T. Wooley the Gearbrandts, Duke Dougherty. We were out and could see the bottom underwater for at least 100yards! After a couple of hours some drunk Swabbies came out in which 2 of them almost drowned! Everyone in the group ripped and had a great time, one of the best memories of my life! We we’re lucky in that everytime we went out there the waves were super That year I had a 10’6 Wardy that weighed 45 lbs.! The next year everyone was surfing on 7’6 boards, and I can remember Mark and Chris Gardner doing 360 turns. They were doing things we just dreamed of in 62 ans 3. This is just now a memory Thank’s everyone for your patience in reading this! Troy Mize (Trojan62

Frank Aragon and Glenn Hanagami, you mentioned what you were bringing however that information was misplaced, can you please call and tell me again. Sorry.. If you see your name with nothing next to it, I'm still awaiting your information. Please get your verification to me quickly. Getting the name cards done is contingent on this. As for the rest of you, I can't guess who you are by looking at your username. Post your first and last name, no shame... Realize that this list does not even come close to all the people that have joined this website. Come on now, we are T minus 30 days to the event. My number again is 392-7072. Have a great day. Aloha, Mike Nii
Mahalo for all the work that you are doing for this reunion. Also to the others that are helping. I’m bringing salad and rice and anything else I can get my hands on to throw in. I’m trying to get my wife to come and also Cino Magallanes. Will confirm when I get the for sure. Really looking forward to this get together but already feeling that we won’t have enought time to spend with all of these guys… gotta be a 3 day event, so much history. What time does the beach close? Hopefully we can stay till night time. Looking at he confirmation list gets everyone stoked up to come. I’m hoping to see Charlie Mizunaka, Mizes, Herbert and Lester, also Errol and Lance Pavo, David Murakami and the list goes on. Stoked to see Isaac, Cleigh, Nathan, “Goonie” Craig Hanagami… Would be special if Mrs. Husic came, she was very important to surfers in Ewa Beach and can be recognized for her and Mr. Husic’s contribution for many generations of surfers.
Hi Mike, I’ll bring Lomi Salmon. Harry Alama, not sure about my brother Bernie. He had a burst appendix and he was in really bad shape. He just got home from being in the hospital a couple of weeks. If he’s OK he may come, but he won’t be staying long, and definitely won’t be surfing.
