Celticray- I remember the Jimi Hendrix concerts at the Shell. I beleive it was July of 69. I bought tickets for Saturday night. Then the next night (Sunday) Guy Kamaka and I went to the Pearl City drive in to see 2001. We were listening to the radio, and 1 of the announcers came on and said that Jimi was giving a free concert to everyone that wanted to go. At that point Guy throws our movie speaker out the window and off we went to the Waikiki shell! That was the last time I ever saw Guy Kamaka. In the late 80’s my brother Lance told me he was stationed at Fort Lewis near Tacoma, I got his phone # and talked to him for about an hour. I never saw or spoke to him after that! I do know that he did 3 tours in Viet Nam and had a chest full of medals. If Guy fought like he surfed he would have been a very formidible soldier!! And if Guy taught you to surf you were lucky to have a great Kanaka surfer to teach you! He was a wonderful friend, a great surfer and soldier. It was an honor for me to consider him my friend, and to have surfed with him sometimes. Troy Mize
Yesterday was the 23rd annual Dale Velzy Classic at Doheny State park, so for all the learning, advise and mentoring from the Ewa crew during my early gemmie days, here’s to you all, I got 2nd place. Surf was 1-3, clean and peeling, luau afterwards, polynesian dance troupe, beautiful day for the sport of Hawaiian kings, ALOHA. See you buggahs soon
Troy, concert was end of May, first couple of days in June; see URL (http://www.flickr.com/photos/brucecmoore/160239259/). Couldn’t have been July - I went in to the army early July. Guess I was…busy on the night of the third concert.

Celticray- I’m sure you’re right about the Hendrix dates. I seem to always remember the right year, but exact months and days are a little fuzzy after over 40 years. Hendrix came back in August of 1970. I bought 4 tickets the first day they went on sale! We got 4 tickets in the 4th row in the middle. He had Billy Cox on Bass and Mitch Mitchell on drums. Tremendous concert! I was always jealous of the drummer, either Mitch or Buddy Miles. Buddy had been afriend of mine in Omaha in 66 and 67. I was totally shocked to have seen Buddy on the Band of Gypsys album. Buddy impressed us in 66 because he could not only play drums well, but could sing as well as he could play the drums. It was about 3 or 4 weeks after Hendrix played in Honolulu that he died. I spent that night with Steve Gardner at his house getting drunk and weeping and sitting there in disbelief at hearing of his death. Now Buddy is gone too as well as other great musicians and surfers. Thank’s for your input! Troy Mize
Troy, I was in Vietnam when Hendrix died.... Went surfing a couple of times at the beach at Chu Lai.
The Guy that glassed for Gooney was Scoopy from Cail’ly; ya think. We made Hallelujah surf boards on Pupu St. behind Gooney’s place thinkin about startin it up again.Crazy.P.S. Shout Out to all da surfers went Kauai from EWA BEACH in the Mikes V-Dub van,- 73 summer 3 mo.s crazy Butch, Frank, Gooney,Scoopy,da boyz shout back!
Remembering the Bands . Douggy Tandel, Mike Pantohan, Waldo Florens, and Abby Quintel, The Souls. Ewa boys with such a talent. They could play the Beatles or just about anything and even take on the charicture of the parts. Impressive and amazing. Remember them at Makalapa Teen Club playing Batman while Charley Ross and I took care of some business. Jammed with them a few times but could never match their talent. And Jesse Morgan and the Moptops. They played at the small room at the back of the bowling ally. Jesse stompt so hard on the stage one night singing Louie Louie, he broke a hole in stage and fell through the floor. Glad I was there, never going to forget it. And Bernie Nacimento, Eppy’s sister, The Royal Impressions. Saw Bernie in the late 80s or early 90s, she was singing in Waikiki. She said come, she get me in free and drink free. But Waikiki out of my realm. And Steve Wofford and Dave Rorke and Vic, Alpo and the Flees. I was in the band with them but quit one week before they went and played opening band for Led Zeplin. I am a backgroud guy and could’nt face an audience like that. I do OK on casual jam but fall apart in front of an audience. Like surfing. Surf better when I just go surf. Surf like idiot when enter compitition. Naky and I used to go to the coffee houses and jam. Get stoned, walk in, sit down, jam, no look up, walk out, get stoned somemore. A lot of good music and impressive musicions came out off Ewa and Ewa Beach. Lucky to have enjoyed it all. Paul S.
Hi TP,
The OGO is gone too. No Ogo, no papapa.
Also, the feed from the Moi farm offshore could be making the lobsters move to deeper water.
I got some slipper lobsters too, The flat ones.
Water pretty dirty lately. Waiting for North winds.....
TT
I sent a message to Guy. I hope he signs in.
TT
Thanks Mike,
I hope to see you when you are in Hawaii.
How's life where you are?

Cellticray-I’m very glad you made it through Viet Nam! We were proud of the fellas that went in and did the best they could under the pressure you guys were under. Someone mentioned Jesse Morgan. He sang and played trombone in our band the “High Speed” in 68,9 and 70!He now does recordings in the L.A. area. Jesse is a great personality and a great talent. I knew him back in 1960 when I was in 7th grade at Highlands Inter. I believe he was in the 9th grade then. He played at the H.I.C. in 63 in a battle of surf bands. He lit his guitar on fire, the first gut I ever saw do that! Troy
I bought this poster from a guy that collected originals and sold them. He had a booth at a flea market in Florida. But I did go to this concert and sat outside the shell in Kapilonani Park. I think it was Roy Aragon, me, Steve Sage... Couple others, but I forget who right now. We planned to jump the fence, but the cops were getting real aggressive. Any way, here it is:
Mike,
I went to a couple of Hendrix concerts, that one at the Shell. From what I remember, he came on and played a chord or two and the sound system blew out. The told everyone to come back another night and had that concert. I don’t know if I’m remembering correctly as someone else brought up a differnet scenario. I do remember walking the fenceline on one concert to see how to get in… I remember going to a couple of Sunshine Fesitivals in Diamond Head Crater. One with David Cueva. We went to hear Steve Miller, at one also there was the Stone Pony’s whose lead singer was Linda Ronstat. Great concerts back then, I missed alot also… that one of Led Zepplin at the Civic. Also missed Janis Joplin and also John Mayall with that band hehad with the sax player. Got to see some great ones though, The Doors, Hendrix, Steppenwolf, CSN& Young, Blue Cheer… As a kid I went with my older cousins from Waipahu to see those Tom Moffit Show of Stars - the ones with all of bands that had one or two hits, they would play their 2 hits and then another one would come out and do the same… Went to one of those Battle of the Bands at the shell also. See you soon
Butch
Butch- The year of 1969 was a great year. I got to play music at night for a living and also go to the beach for the “evening glass off”! Our band usually played 6 or 7 nights a week that year. Sometimes we got breaks between gigs and I would get to go to some of the concerts usually at the H.I.C. I took my brothers and sister to see Blood Sweat & Tears. Before they played, John Mayall and his band played first, I remember that well because John Mayall had no drummer! It was all I could do to sit there and listen to them play with no drummer. Some of the members of our band “High Speed” were sitting behind the stage and they kept urging me on between songs to get up on stage and play with them. But I was poultry and didn’t go up (I always wished that I would have tried to get up there and played on Bobby Columbos drums, he was the Blood,Sweat and Tears drummer, and he was a fantastic drummer! The next day we went to Barbers O. beach and some of the fellas that knew I played drums kept telling me "Hey Troy, you should have gotten up there and played with those guys, it just sounded empty without a drummer.! About a week later we were playing at the “Dunes” by the airport, a girl I knew came in with Ritchie Havens, he sat in with us for 2 hours and had a blast! So, that’s why 69 was such a great year for me. We got to meet a lot of great surfers and great musical artists. Troy
Any one know if they still goin dynamite thu Three Stumps;just pass Coves.Befor O.Beach for their lagoon opening for Ocean Point if so they will ruin a great Mantaray feeding ground, One time out there John Francis[dose any one rember John] and I were sitting waiting for waves, watching clouds, look up no clouds, but shadows passing us just as fast and big looking from the top of the water,We stare at each other in wonder,I see a shark fin pop up on Johns right side maybe two feet out and by the look on his face some thing was going on my left, we could have just touched finger tips I no sooner look over my sholder and theres another fin! Next second were in the air doin back flips! Splash I get back to my board and lookin up I see a 20’ ft. ray tip to tip FLY’IN 3’ ft’ off the water sailed out what hade to be 40’ ft.toward open ocean.Iam layin across my board screamin John, John, you see that,John? He was half way to the shore line, couple of waves later I was with him,and could not belive the power of that ray we did two back flips still sittin on ower boards befor we hit the water.I think that ray was just favin some fun with us,for sumthinto do!Sure hope they don’t go through with that.
Last I heard, the blasting/opening up of the lagoon at Tree Stumps is no longer a threat. I'm guessing Haseko screwed up the Environmental Impact Statement or maybe never even made one when they had big plans for their lagoon which by the way, would probably only be accessible to people with plenty money. The other tragedy would be that they would have to dredge Tree Stumps to make it deeper for the boats to access the lagoon. After that, no mo waves.....Aloha, Mike
Just a general comment about dredging, blasting, boat harbors and other restructuring of Hawai’i’s coastline…the pros and cons should be very public, and should be subject to independent, transparent oversight, not subject to the whims and wishes of people that live in Hawai’i part time, sucking down the best and giving back nothing (Larry Ellison).
Who on this blog needs better access for their boat? Who on this blog would be impacted by an inadequate environmental impact study? Independent oversight is needed to ensure local and state agencies play by the rules, that the rules make sense and serve the people. Every county, every island, and every town is at risk when government action and inaction doesn’t get a regular dose of sunshine.
We need clean water; we need clean air; we need clean government - I’m not sure we have that now, and it pisses me off.
OK, ok…I’m takin’ a knee.
The people that want to dredge that area would be criminal in my humble opinion. Many a time we would park whatever piece of junk we would be driving at the end of back road. Paddle out after the “smoke out” by the old barbed wire fence. We would see big sea turtles, rays, sometimes medium sized sharks. And other wonderful critters of the ocean.Let’s face it, that area wasn’t very beautiful, but you could paddle out when it was 1 hour before getting dark and you could look toward the beach and for a while it would be beautiful, gorgeous! They (who are they?tore up Maile beach,so 2 or 3 boats a day could come and go)! At least that’s how it was in the mid 60’s. Now “they” want to do it to the three stumps area, if these people want to live near a lake they should move to Lake Muchocaca in Wisconsin or something! But that area should be left alone for the people and memories that the area represents This is my opinion, that’s all. Troy Mize Long live Ewa Beach!!
The Hendrix concert is one that Iregret , its cool we still could hear him rip. Black Sabbath was one of those concerts that blew everybodys mind, Jeff Beck at Andrews UH was mean, those were the days it didn't cost much and after a good day of surfing it was a good way to mellow out at the end of the day.I'm greatful for all those cool people back then that did the same groove, concerts. Today its so insane, I checked out the so call access road that Haseko was suppose to provide for the Ewa Beach residents , you will only have limited space to get to Barbers, no vehical passage allowed. You might get to park at one of the parks and walk or bike in.Awaiting word from senator Espero's office about Essex road acces.Going on 15 years of only golf club members use of the road, they don't want any riff raff to ruin their game..What ever they smoking must be good..Peace.
