ewa beach late 60's

Country boys got to make their games out of the dirt and water around them. City boys only get their fun from making money. Soul versus gold. Soul is rich in Ohana. Gold is rich in paper. One hug from my Ohana is worth more to me than anything money could buy. No man with money is worth more than my brothers who came from dirt and water. Every time a rich man gets richer, somebody suffers. Every time a hug is given, a heart is healed. Just lucky to be a country boy from Ewa Beach…Paul

No God was ever above us or controled us, He was one of us…Amen

one of my Ten Years After songs:

Everywhere is freaks and hairies

Dykes and fairies, tell me where is sanity

Tax the rich, feed the poor

Till there are no rich no more

I’d love to change the world

but I dont know what to do

So I’ll leave it up to you

Population keeps on breeding

Nation bleeding, still more feeding, economy

Life is funny, skies are sunny

Bees make honey, who needs money, monopoly

I’d love to change the world

but I dont know what to do

So I’ll leave it up to you

(insane guitar solo I believe at this point)

World pollution, theres no solution

Institution, electrocution

Just black and white, rich or poor

Them and us, stop the war

Id love to change Ewa Beach

But I dont know what to do

So I’ll leave it up to you, Haseko and council people too

to be continued…

Paul your post says it all. But the world has changed and greed is running strong.

I’d Love to Change the World I love this song seems more relevant than ever.

Wind’s gonna blow so I’m gonna go

Down on the road again

Starting where the mountains left me

I’m up where I began

Where I will go the wind only knows

Good times around the bend

Get in my car, goin’ too far

Never comin’ back again

Tired and worn I woke up this mornin’

Found that I was confused

Spun right around and found I had lost

The things That I couldn’t lose

The beaches they sell to build their hotels

My fathers and I once knew

Birds all along sunlight at dawn

Singing Ewa Beach blues

Did anyone go to the killa’ Sunday Manoa Concert at Andrews Amphitheater back in da day?

Does anybody remember being at Steve Wofford’s house for a party when Country Comfort played in his garage?

How about C&K in their “FM” prime at the sold out concert at the Wakiki Shell?

One night at Stephen Oasay’s house back in da early 80’s, Malani Bilyeu of Kalapana was there and sang a “chicken skin” solo of “You make it hard”.

One night back in the early 80’s in the dead of night around midnight Imua and a few of us were having a party in one of the cabanas at the Turtle Bay when outta nowhere Kapono and da Cazimero brother who plays guitar showed up and started jammin’ together; the first song they sang was “sailing” and it was “ono” to say the least.

None of us will ever forget a really good wave or a really good song sung or performed.

Frank & Paul! Yes we were country guys. I do remember Concerts @ Amphitheater from da 70’s. Steve Wolford is my cousin on Moms side. He brought over Country Confort to my house on Maui back in the 70’s. And yes I went to many concerts w/ GK, Mel, Danny Coliier, Ike, Kuna, Rick P. and many more. Seen Santana and Jose Feliciano at Diamond head Crater concert. Crazy!! Waikiki Shell, John Mayall, Young Rascals, Gabby Pahinui, Hendrix on Maui. Lived next door the guitar player for Quicksilver in Makawao. Tripping with on his Crosby on his boat in Lahaina Harbor. OK nuff said for now! See you all in a couple of weeks.

Gabby Pahinui, he was the best. I saw him perform at Honey’s in the Kaneohe, Kailua area in 1966 and in 1969! He sang like he had many Hawaiian spirits in him!  I still have a record or 2 of his, plus a couple of 8 tracks, cassettes, and cds. When I get depressed or sad about something, I put on one of his pieces and after about 10 seconds of listening to “Gabby” i’m happy again. He was one of the best musical artist I ever saw and heard! It was an honor to meet  and talk to him! He was a great man. All of you fella’s should give him a listening to.He was Hawaii, and Hawaii was him! Troy Mize  p.s. Thank’s for bringing up Gabby Pahinui,He was a gentleman and full of the Hawaiian Spirit!

Honey’s in Kaneohe was owned by Don Ho’s mother. Uncle Don got his start there. Don graduated with one of my cousins in 48’ Kamehameha. In High School we would go down to Waimanalo to the Awo’s place. Kalani being my classmate at Kam. Sundays listen to live jam miusic with Gabby his son’s and the Kalima’s. Later on Sunday Manoa was jamming there too and hence the birth of that group. Original Sunday Manoa, Palani Vaughn, Baby Kalima, Peter Moon, Bla and Cyril Pahinui. Later, would morph to become Peter Moon and the Brother’s Cazimero. Gabby was originally from Kona. Moved to Kakaako, then later Waimanalo Homestead. As you mentioned earlier, a talented classic Hawaiian musician. Small kine quiz! Anyone remember his first well known group? Atta Issacs, Eddie Kamae were a part of that. They generally wore Palaka shirts. Nuff hints! If you were into kanaka music and old enough then you wopuld know.

Das 2 easy. Son’s of Hawai’i. Eddie, Gabby, Joe “Gang” Marshall, and David “Feet” Rodgers.

Hey Butch,

I think we went to that 2nd night concert together and walked the fence line trying to figure out how to get over. The cops had maze spray out and ready to use. A few guys did get hit with it. Maybe Billy Sage drove? We were too young to have license then. I was only 15. You must have been 16 or 17. Which reminds me: This reunion will be a blast from the past! My daughter Emma runs up to me every morning saying "Daddy! Only 10 more days til Hawaii!", "Daddy! Only 7 more days till Hawaii!". Looking forward to some lau-laus and poi!

Until next week,

Mike

I remember the concert…it was Jimi, ginger baker on drums and knol redding bass…awesome…troy and I went first song was national anthem Jimi style was great…he broke a few strings and change it as he played purple laze…Guy

Maybe  another time.

Hey Rex, good to see you adding your input here. Howz everything going in Kawaihae? We’re getting together at Officer’s Beach on the 15th. I hope you can make it.

David’s mom and my mom still live on Ololani St. Bernie lives with my mom, I’m not sure who lives with David’s mom, might be Leonard.

I remember your dad coming out to Officer’s on his wooden paipo and surfing with us. When I was still in high school and hitchin rides home from Kamehameha with Kevin Kahalekulu, he used to pick Kevin Kahalekulu and me up at the corner of Ft Weaver and Farrington Hwy whenever he passed by.

It’s Friday 9/7/12; it’s about 8:45am HST and the Country is experiencing it’s 1st winer swell of the season. It’s already a solid 2’ and rising; and should be overhead by tonight, Hallelujah! Unless you got to travel,( like Butch did to Jeffrey’s Bay South Africa) you didn’t even see a 6’ wave all summer; what a bummer summer. It’s an El Nino winter predicted; so that means bigger waves and storms to generate 'um.

For those of you who are getting here for the reunion alittle early like Mel, maybe they’ll be some good surf to surf before the day of the party, I don’t know. I would love to surf with you guys; maybe even dawn patrol somewhere that day?

to be continued…

Harry! It was meant to be easy. Anyways see you all next week.

Akeae10-Here it is 46 years since I first heard Gabby and I still listen to him everyday! Well maybe I miss a day now and then. But Gabby and his band made a huge impression on me. You mentioned Waimanalo, I stayed with Ben Paanao and his son Ben Jr. from Waimanolo in 66. They were very good people, we worked at Kaiser Golf Course that summer. It was between Kailua and Waimanolo ( I think) it’s been 46 years. We all got $1.60 an hour and they thought (management) we were overpaid

To Guy it’s great to hear from you on here Guy. Remember when we spent the night sleeping in the sand in 63 near Barbers, we woke up to 8 to 10 foot waves at Johns Beach (the cove)! We would take off on the same huge peak, you would go left and I went right, what a day that was! And we had a great time at the Shell watching Jimi Hendrix. See you at the re-union ( I hope) old friend. Troy Mize

Guy Kamaka! Cleigh Eaton here. Nice to hear from you on swaylocks. Hope to see soon next week anyway. Spoke to Norman Nauka he’ll be coming fron Vegas. John Sadowski, Mince and Mouse along with brother Nathan and Barney Silva. too.Tried getting a hold of Doug Kingsley on Molokai but bradda is currently unreachable. If you didn’t hear, Kevin Johns passed in February here on Maui. Both Nate and myself had the honors to give brada a good send off. His ashes were spread in Paia out by Baldwin Park.

Previous blog entries mentioned dredging off Ewa Beach - I know there have been some incredible developments in the past 20 years, making expansion of Ft. Weaver necessary.  Last time I saw Ewa Beach, just a couple of years ago…well, just didn’t look good.  So, the website below has Environmental Impact Studies (EIS) that were done, finalized, supplemented, etc…  If Haseko didn’t do the right thing it is discoverable, it is probably on the website below, and they and the state government should be held accountable by the people impacted by the failure.  Just saying…
