EXO-FIBERFILLER

…I have stumbled onto a filler that should replace the need for the use of any other fillers when doing ding repair, boxes, etc. …It’s a polyester type fiber that is imbedded with silica(crystal clear when resin is added). As you mix it with resin the silica swells into a gell suspending the fibers. It only takes a small amount in comparsion to using cabocel, fiberglass or Q-cell.Plus it’s TOUGH!!!It can also be used in different bases ,oils, resins, water, etc. …I have made a few sets of Superchargers with this material and poly-resin alone, with amazing results,no more using bi-directional fiberglass!!! …I need to R&D it somemore ,but it’s 110% right now,and the kicker is it’s avalible everywhere, fairly cheap too!Herb

Could you take this stuff and perhaps cast nose and tailblocks out of it? I like the crystal clear aspect, maybe even make tinted blocks from it.I have done this in the past using casting resin but I felt that it was a bit to brittle.Sounds very interesting, very interesting indeed.

Would “feminine products” work as well as diapers? In the plant business they use a similar granular product. You put it in a vase and add water. It swells and looks like ice. You stick in cut flower stems. They stay fresh longer, and the “ice” stays fresh. You don’t have to change it like you do water. I’d bet this is the same stuff, but in bulk supply. I’m talkin to the local flower lady to find her supplier.

Hey Herb…What in the world were you looking for the first time you ripped apart a diaper?

Hey Herb…What in the world were you looking for the first time you > ripped apart a diaper? …Sometime back in the late 80s while working for the State of California Hospitals,we received several batches of these experimental diapers. The first ones were horrible and split open easily. It did however let me in on it’s construction.I later talked to rep. for the diaper company and he told me of the contents. …I never did put two and two together until about a week ago.My wife bought a small wadding pool for my 2 daughters.Keani my 2yr.old was playing in the pool in her clothes shortly after I filled it up,her diaper swelled up and she began to pick/pull the filler gelled out of her pants and started throwing it at Kayla my 7yr.old. …I later washed down the patio, and the next day the residual left from the diaper was a fiber long in strand length, and super tough…but no gell???I then started taking them apart and checking the inner contents,I found a mat of fibers impregnated with silca crystals.Next thing you know I’m mixing it all kinds of stuff to watch for results…The rest is history.Herb

THE ANSWER of course Tuna! You know Herb he is “da man” when it comes to innovation in my book. I haven’t bought diapers in years, not that I didn’t change a few thousand though. I’m buying some today! Mike (Sway) howzabout an innovators award here for some of these breakthroughs? As long as you have those diapers torn up is there enought left to use for cleanups and spills? Tom S.>>> Hey Herb…What in the world were you looking for the first time you > ripped apart a diaper?

depends!

I can just picture Herb, in a dark corner of his garage disecting diapers and examining the contents. That’s F’ing hilarious. Herb, You Rule!!!

Herb, do you think the diaper fiberfiller is strong enough to make full sized 8 or 9 inch fin with just fiberfiller and sanding resin?

Herb, do you think the diaper fiberfiller is strong enough to make full > sized 8 or 9 inch fin with just fiberfiller and sanding resin? …That would be a far stretch,it might work???but if you mixed it with say polymer plastic yeah, but it would have to be molded in either case.Herb

…That would be a far stretch,it might work???but if you mixed > it with say polymer plastic yeah, but it would have to be molded in either > case.Herb HERB: This has gotta be one of my all-time favorite threads, love the post “what were you thinking of tearing apart diapers” I got the same reaction from my wife when I asked for a diaper to check it out —now she’s hiding them from me, I have two kids in diapers so I know they are here somewhere—anyway great find—I’ve gotta go search for the missing pampers now.

…That would be a far stretch,it might work???but if you mixed > it with say polymer plastic yeah, but it would have to be molded in either > case.Herb Thanks Herb. Yeah, I was thinking of trying a mold. Any advice on some good molding material? Also, could you please explain what you mean by polymer plastic?

California Crystals, Aqua Crystals, Rainsavers, Watersorb… I read where it’s available at Home Depot under the Lesco brand. The crystals below are colored by the colored candle oil. When you add water they are crystal clear. I’ve seen it: http://rainsavers.com/

Thanks Herb. Yeah, I was thinking of trying a mold. Any advice on some > good molding material? Also, could you please explain what you mean by > polymer plastic? … …I had a website address somewhere for molding/molding products, but I’m not sure what I did with it?I would start on the net or a library for info. on molding and molding materials…If you are near O.C.California you can contact J.B.J. PLASTICS I believe in Garden Grove. They carry a large supply of molding materials, and plastics…polymer plastics are the newschool plastics of the era, like fiber-loaded zytel/zylex.Herb
