exotic fin glassing

When weighting my boards I’ve noticed too much weight stays on the fins. Compared to a standard FCS-mounted board of same dimensions and glassing, the glass-on fins boards are too heavy. I was thinking to try a new glassing approach on my next board: -glueing the fins in position vith lam resin & cabosil -instead of the roving rope I’ll put a mix of very lightly waxed resin (1%) and cabosil or even better microspheres -wait till dry and sand the resin around the fins very smoothly -glass on a small patch of 6oz that stops at less than half fin on both sides of every fin -sand the resin at the junction with the fin and hot coat normally I tried this on a repair and works real well Only notice that you can do this only on fiber fins, for plastic ones you’ll need the whole fiber to be cloth covered.

The tail of the board is the part that moves the least, weight with in the normal range is neglible is how the board rides. Fins put on with out some type of ribbed reinforcement will come off sooner than later. We got by for untold years with glass ons, but now the tails are too heavy? The stength is not needed up the fin, but out on the flats around it, when a fin tears off it takes the glass off the board first.

What I do with glassons is after tacking.I lay up a sheet of 4 or 6oz that goes up the fin 1-2" and 1-2" on the board lay the rope, and add another sheet or two about have way up the fin(s).The most important part is to make sure that the sheet extends out onto the board alot(4-6").This has given me a better strength, flex, weight ratio.Herb.
