Experimental "pintail" fish

Anyone tried an outline like this? I took an old 70’s Gerry Lopez style single fin pintail and outlined it twice with the tail offset each time four inches from center.

Shlooks like a stretched McCoy Horan…

Widepoint back can work good in certain clean conditions, same with wide tails, and they paddle well and catch waves early too… by tipping in early.

Yeah, after looking at it again, it looks kinda like a wider nosed lazer zap. I was thinking it would be an interesting longboard alternative, especially if I kept it thick. Any thoughts on rocker?

I think rocker depends totally on the kind and size waves you’re riding and your size, paddling, wavecatching, that you prefer.

Assuming that board is made for smaller, slower, under head high weak surf, then a flatter rocker like off a 7’5" blank with maybe three 1/8th tail cuts is plenty. That would give you maybe 1.75 of tail thickness to work with, if you use the back of the blank.

That kind of rocker is for weak, small surf and give you great wave catching, acceleration, and speed. If you like good easy turning, add more planer cuts.

I’ve owned several 7’ boards with wider than 16" tails, most of them being around 19" wide, so I like WPoints back for the snappy turning and easy wave catching.

But matching outline and rocker to the waves you plan to ride that board in is the key to having a good working board.

One reason we always have a quiver of boards ready to go at the beach.
