Exposed Cork Techniques?

I just bagged two full deckpads of 1/8" exposed cork this weekend

was wondering what the best way the exposed cork guys use to  finish the exposed edges

I was planning on sanding down the edges flush so it won't pull up but do I need to seal it wiith resin?

since both boards are brand new

I went the deck pad contact cement route using the bag as a clamp

I tried trimming the cork edge at an angle but there's still a significant expose lip

that looks like it can pull up and tear off

I even made cutout so the shapers logos couls still show gotto sand the inside of those as well

I have another former 10' surftech softop and a couple other compsand shorties

that I'm planning on lamming the cork to the decks with an underpayer of glass since these will all be rail wraps.to the bottom tuck

Since these are all finished and glassed boards

I was thinking of just using 2oz under the cork as a binding agent to keep the weight down.but should I be using 4oz instead?

or HUIE,

SHOULD I BE USING THAT WALMART NYLON MESH WE"VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT? (done in Huie talk)

I like the idea of moving away from dirty ear wax sparsed with curly hairs where and when I can

Just to pile on…in Drew’s defense, he is a fully upstanding, passionate boardmaker that is more friendly than 99% of your typical businesmen.  He has been making boards in Florida for quite some time and is always going out of his way to help people, and thus he is not the next big thing by grabbing and stabbing to push his products.  Unlike most of us on here that post, there are the tacit contingent that mine this place for exploitation that comes best served in shipping containers. Drew, I hope to finally use that bit of cork you so graciously gave me last summer during that I-95 exchange.  I’ve finally got a break from work coming up.

drew - i need some cork for a little kiteboard project i have going on! i will give you a call this week. richard

jeez bernie ya yelling at me i must of went to sleep?

**i dont use it the way you think **

this is all under vacum

then i add the cork

as for the edges  if you try to cut the ede as close to a neat shape seal with a coat of epoxy you can then sand the cork edge much cleaner blend it inn  all good

apply cork with epoxy and use peel ply  it will come out clen as and pull a good vac on the cork you wont break anything haa

cheers huie

I wouldn’t worry about sealing the edges. I don’t even sand the edges. I made a few exposed ones now and I haven’t had any problems with the edges tearing. Looking at drew’s, the beveled edges look nicer, though.

i recently did one with 3 oz cloth, nylon mesh, 3 oz cloth, exposed cork on the deck. Only ridden once, and the fin box needs replacing, so no judgement on the lam schedule, yet.

hi huie and ghost shaper !

  that 'nylon mesh' ...

[ that looks a bit like ? 'coremat ' , eh ?] ....WHERE do you guys get that from , please ?

does it soak up / need a lot of [extra] resin , if you are hand laminating it ?

I ask , because I'd be keen to 'fin panel' it ...

.....it is called 'nylon mesh ' in australia , huie  ?

  cheers

Hey Guys been thinkin of doing the cork top also. Anyone know were to get cork in florida?? thanks

Thanks Chrisp,cheers

Ben

don’t know if this a trade secret but

I found mine at walmart in the lining area of the fabric section

(same place to get inexpensive perferated peel ply and breather)

different colors and hole sizes I got beige(for wood skins) and white

pure superlight nylon netting woven in a heaxgonal pattern

used as a binding agent under and in between glass or under skins to provide a form of light tensile strength.

made for bagging though not hand lams

cheap too $1 something USD a yard that’s like 60" wide of how ever wide a fabric bolt comes in

combine that with aero mat and i think you have the new, new thang

if you get the southern drift

hopefully Holly would approve.

Is Huie the new Holly?

Is Huie the new Holly?

**haa’’ it was j d that talked tuelle to me’’   but the very best stuff is sports netting lightweight  **

What’s up Guys!! I got a rash of email requesting corecork today so I knew something was going on over here:)

I have to take just a minute and tell you guys about the patent I was awarded for cork deck surfboards. I was working on this patent for the last 18 months, more of a pain in the ass than I expected. On December 25, 2012 the uspta awarded me the design patent cork deck surfboards. Kind of cool how they dish those out on Christmas. I’ll tell you the short version of why I punished myself with this deal as it’s really turned into another job for me as if I didn’t have enough going on (plus new baby girl in the house keeping me up all night:)

I was so worried about 2 things; guys cheaping out and using junk cork on the boards they fall apart and all the hard work I’ve done is written off with those failures (we all know how fast bad news travels) plus worried about every single import junk label launching their version of a cork board and the guys who are building sick cork boards now have nothing unique (kind of like how there’s bamboo on everything). That’s the short version.

I hope you guys can see that I jumped into this to protect “us” from “them” rather than to make myself into this big bad wolf saying “you can’t build those I have a patent…” because that part of this deal sucks. I’ve been really too busy to come on here and talk about all of this, but it’s something you guys should know. I’m all about making sure the guys who want to build a few have access to small quantity sub licensing deals, affordable and easy. Just call me, my cell is (904) 347-8879 email is drew@inspiredsurfboards.com .

Just know that there are suits involved who have to make sure the patent isn’t infringed on and they get paid before I do:) I don’t come on here much anymore, but I have a very real investment in making sure the cork boards you guys build come out tits with zero problems. If you know me at all, you know how easy it is to get in touch, and I’ve usually got more than a mouthfull about these boards, but I’m pretty much keeping it off of here, I’d be stoked if you guys did too.

Bernie, to answer your question, I always lap over my cork edge. Lots and lots and lots of blending work, dragon skin works nicely. I do a cutlap from the bottom over my edge. I wouldn’t think you would gain much going from 2 oz under to 4 oz as far as your exposed edge is concerned I like 2 oz, use it as often as I can. I’ve been using some other stuff under the cork that I’m really stoked on, call me and I’ll get into that.

Huie, love how your sports mesh looks on the rail man.

^^LOL

prior art buddy,

Dont get it, whats so funny?

“…Just know that there are suits involved …”

Really…???..

I hate it when that happens…Someone comes out with something new, fresh, original, then gets copied…Maybe the copier will take out a patent, just because there isn’t one…The Suits might even go after the originator, becuse they make money that way…

August 2008 - http://www.swaylocks.com/node/1028693

Weird taking notes of the guys that get upset versus the guys that realize how awesome to have something unique patent protected. Kind of funny and sad at the same time. Im here to help Paul. Let me squash this real quick too. I never copied anything. I figured this out remotely of what anyone else did. Now who knows if someone somewhere else did, out of the millions of patent holders out there I doubt theres any that hadnt heard “I thought of that first”. This isn’t my first patent work, I’m pretty used to that. I just know that I’ve busted my ass for 20 years building boards and barely making rent. Im a pretty smart guy and saw the opportunity to keep something unique and had to bust a move. I had to, noone else is. We would just sit back in our dirty little rooms getting more pissed at the man or the machines or the corpos who are ruining the soul or any of the other bs we all waste so much time thinking about. You guys can do that here all day without me, I’ve got a little family to look after and I’m going to provide by building surfboards. If you want in call whenever you feel like it, here all day everyday.

OK, here is funny:

so, guys build boards with cork for ten or twenty or fifty years, off and on, by many recipes, all over the world.

2013, some wise-guy with “tang” in his name hops on line (possibly after drinking five pots of coffee by his writing style) and claims to have patented cork decks, or some method of applying cork, or something.

That’s called, “making a funny”

Because if it was true, “tang”  would have either referenced the patent specifically, or said nothing and filed suit against cork board builders who are already out there, and have been since before he thought of filing a patent.

On the off chance there is any truth in your claim, “tang,” stop wasting time and money on “suits” and try to build some decent boards, corked or uncorked, you will get more fun and maybe even some money that way. Now “tang” you might really be a shaper and even have a family and a sore attitude about “corpos,”  etc., but this patent stuff is a silly waste of time in my humble kookk opinion.

Cheers,

(yawwwn, yawwn, troll on…))))

US D673233 S1 . Here is a pic of one I built for Mason via Lost its in the newest surfing. I know you dont know me but im not a troll. My goal isnt to sit idly and wait to sue somebody. Thatd what the suits want me to but im not wired like that. Yup I drink alot of coffee. I dont hate corpos or shaping machines. Im stoked youve got so much experience with cork, call me sometime if you want. Im wasting time again, back at it.

came out upside down now that’s funny I’m not used to this new phone Plus haven’t been here in quite a while still a major time sucker upper

Well ok i’m a kook, but you probably know that already!

Anyway, if you aren’t going after people.and being a litigating jerk, why bother with a patent, is what I was wondering.

By all means, be a nice guy, you probably are one, sorry if I had it wrong…
