Fairing & Beveling Fibreglass

Especially on the f@$&!$g bottom! Ding repairers will know what I mean. I’ve tried finding a router bit that has a slightly beveled bottom, kind of like the picture I’ve attached only with a slight bevel to it instead of flat. Then I could just slap down some rulers for a make shift jig and bevel away. Anyone heard of something like this?

Hey Deanbo,

I kinda think I know what your looking for, a router bit that flushes-in the glass, tapering it down to

nothing at an edge.

I’ve had success using a Panel Profile bit, but I have to warn that it works best when constrained by

a jig. The following shows a pic of a bit, it is the second one on the right (not affiliated with the site):

BTW, you can use pieces of wood attached to the board as a “trap jig”. Attaching can be done with

double-sticky tape or hotmelt glue. Works well for ding repair or certain shaping features.

That is very much along the lines of what I am looking for. Would be nice if there was a bit that was about 80 degrees.

A power sander works for me for speed but I usually take the time to finish it by hand sanding.

the key to getting things smooth is knowing how mush to sand out initially before adding a patch so the new glass has somthing to sit in.

If your adding mutiple layers of cloth make the second layer bigger than the first.

Make the second layer of cloth 1/2" larger that you think you will need. Once cured round off any corners then fair the edges of the cloth before hot coating. This is where the extra cloth comes in, sand only the edges till the patch actually starts to shrink in size.

When you hot coat tape up 1/2" - 1" past the edge of the patch, then when to come to fairing in the repair you wont hit weave at the edges. Again start by rounding the corners then fair the edges so they start to recede like before.

When it comes to polishing it up, polish 1/2" past the whole repair.

Not really what your after but I hope that helps.

The trick to fairing in patches and the like is to use two layers of 4 oz cloth; the outer one is always smaller. The outer layer is almost sacrifical during sanding and insures that the main layer below isn’t sanded and weakened.

Cool. Will do.
