Family Man, Bonga Perkins, Ripped Off

From Free Surf Hawaii Surf Magazine:

“Since the Lei Lei’s Bar and Grill at Turtle Bay Resort Expression Session at the Excel Pro at Sunset Beach in Nov. 2005, certain contest officials have viewed Bonga Perkins as a flaker. That’s because Perkins was absent form the awards ceremony, where he was to receive the first place check of $1000. Although Bonga waited around for over 20 minutes after the event, he was forced to leave so he could pick up his daughter. " I’m a part time surfer and a full time dad,” says Perkins. As a result of Bonga’s absence from the award ceremony, contest directors moved second placer to first, third to second and fourth to third place. The full-time dad went home with his daughter and without any well-earned prize money."

A lifetime of set waves for Bonga for having his priorities in good order!!

10 - 4 on that Proneman! Bonga’s a great guy.

REMEMBER !!! contest begins with the the letters C O N .

Bonga is a great guy and its great that his family is priority. However, the contest rules state that the winner must be present. Bonga failed to notify the contest directors of his whereabouts before he left. Think about the sponsors who paid for the event, not having the winner present for the big photo next to the sponsor logo, leaving the sponsor without the full advertisement opportunity that the sponsor was entitled to. Bonga could have at least notified the contest directors, he’s been doing contests long enough to know. Secondly, that is a part of work… thats his job to be responsible enough to do so. What about a nuclear power plant worker who would leave the job suddenly without first making sure that everything was responsibly left safe, only because he had to pick up his daughter? Family comes first, but that doesn’t mean we should be irresponsible when it comes to our job.

yep thet there newcleeare

power polant anaology is

appropough.

them mizerable downtrodden contest officials had a dinner and a night of drinkin’ and carowsing to get to.

besides this is the llife line to credibility for the entire sport of kings

where would surfing be with out

commercial promotion.

does this mean that mister perkins can recind the rights to the sponsors

of the contest to use any photos of his surfing during the CONTEXT?

without substantial payment?

party of the first part

in subsoquence erdatum

compous mentus.

the blasphemous attitudes

from the heritics of the true faith

are suspect.The indignities suffered

by talented athletes will be atoned.

one quick call to the pope and all this can be settled.

these are just the kind of things that started the spanish inquisition.

Please bless the sponsors with ten fold their graciousness and

Then he shall be forced to wear the stone of shame.

Bonga’s a good guy though. I’ve got a kid and I totally agree with Bonga’s statement about being a part time surfer full time dad.

Down with notification.

Hmm couldn’t he have notified the officials, “I must go pick up my offspring. She has a 170 db voice. I’ll be back” or asked “yo, could you substitute a award receiver for me? They do that in baseball when the hitter is to lazy or slow to run.”

But props for choosing kids over $$. Besides he’ll probably make that or more next contest.

Think about the sponser with a blackmark on their name!

nuclear power worker = pro surfer not following you on this one; try harder…

Wasn’t this a surfboard forum?

Lei Lei’s Bar and Grill at Turtle Bay Resort<------well now! here’s a place I choose not to spend MY money on my next trip to hawaii’ and so also should anyone who’s a parent

hey roger! what’s new? good to hear from you.

i have a feeling the folks in charge knew bonga had to run-that’s probably what transpired during the 20 minute period he hung out after contest-can i get my $ now, i gotta go in 20 min. to pick up my daughter.no, you have to wait for cermony which will be i just a few minutes…(5 minutes later, repeat. 15 minute later, repeat. 20 minutes and he has to go)bonga did the right thing…

this really sucks- Bonga did the right thing and we shouldn’t be surprised that contest organisers could do something this lame, but it still sucks. I can never afford places like the Turtle Bay when I’m in HI, but I’m still boycotting them all the same.

I don’t see Surfboard Design here…
