Fat Penguin Questions.

Can someone tell me some good info about the Fat penguin it seems so scattered throughout all the other topics…I though I’d start this one.

Hey A marketing ploy to get you to spend your money and buy into a design that is plain ole absurd, but with the cool chick and nice colors, kinda interesting for surfers who haven’t tried anything more than their tried and true. Technical hogwash…

You gotta watch these latest revolutionary things that come along. Like those ab trimmer’s.

One thing you gotta watch is the arm chair experts… Love to answer any questions as best as I can, if I get stuck Ill get Paul over to sort it… First things first… Here is a performance report from a FP owner… Hello Paul and Tony, Feed back, after two months, I have tried a number of fin configurations, currently I am surfing with five fins, the four outer fins as supplied with the board (do you have a name for the little fins?) and a GX centre fin (100mm base by 100mm height (old model as current GX’s have a 98mm base)). This is my favourite configuration so far, with this I am able to destroy waves. Please note that tomorrow I will probably try a different configuration. Criticisms that the Fat Penguin does not turn are unfounded. How fast is the Fat Penguin? I don’t know, I can’t quantitatively measure it, but it is devastatingly fast, certainly quicker than anything that I have ever seen or riden. Believe it, it is real, I make tubes that would have previously nailed me. Does the Fat Penguin accelerate quickly? Believe it, I am used to it now and don’t even notice it, but I did struggle to come to terms with this when taking off on a wave. The Fat Penguin paddles poorly like any other short board, but paddles onto a wave quite unlike anything else. It paddles on earlier than a shortboard but later than a Mal, but a Mal accelerates very slowly. The wave lifts the back of the board up and throws it onto the wave, the board then charges down the face quite unlike anything else and here is the rub, you have to get to your feet very quickly. You learn very quickly to put your board back in the bag on land to avoid unwanted attention. I weigh 97 Kg and my Fat Penguin is 6’8" by 17 1/4" by 20" by almost 2 3/4", I suspect that a 7’8" Fat Penguin would be devastatingly fast, I say choose the length that you want (many Mal riders would be very happy with a 7’8" version), don’t let Paul sway you on this one, however 17 1/4" and 20" is quite sufficient. I happily ride my 6’8", but feel that had I jumped off my Mal onto a 7’8" version, I would have charged from the first day and probably never known any different. I feel that there is room in the world for Emperor Penguins. In summary, I am deliriously happy with my Fat Penguin. Cheers http://www.geocities.com/wunderboyi/ninetysixpercent.html

Hi, It seems to me from the description about how to ride a penguin that it’s ridden more off the back foot than the front foot. Would it be possible to modify the design to make it ride better off the front foot? Move the wings a bit further forward perhaps? regards, Håvard

Riding a Penguin has been summed up like this…Once you find the correct foot positioning its a matter of weight shifting…which doesnt seem like enough effort you would need to turn a board of any type…Another way to put it, if you have ever riden a snow board this would be a good example of useing weight shifting to turn…Its just a matter of balance between stalling and driving once you get the feel its purely a matter of moving your head and then the rest follows…FP are very balanced equipment… http://www.geocities.com/wunderboyi/ninetysixpercent.html

whats the prefereed fin config. and how much to have you guys make me one.

If you aren’t the Bloated Penguin guy’s mom, I’ll eat your Penguin.

now that is true inovation …note the enlarged tail fin offering greater stability, also improving lift to drag ratios and making it absoloutly stable and low speeds …note also the straighter out line for driving around endless sections…perfect also for dribble the kind we been gettin on this thread…and a true peice of genius the concave deck even if you take a step wrong the board will correct your steps guaranteeing you’ll rip every time…this board works so well even a black and white slightly battered fat penguin can ride it… we call it ??? any sugestions?? BERT

is that a solid wooden board or just a laminate? i don’t see any wax on this thing. is t.e. saying the penguin can be ridden wax free? somebody help me.

shoot some video

Cambered balsa, concave deck (Stu’s the man), military-grade textured deck (see Loehr), skeg custom made by Paul Jensen (glasser/fin guy was messed up, what’s new), Brom had lots of input on the rocker, Jim Phillips shaped the thing (more work than it looks). Penguin has the easy part. Lots of love, Rob Olliges

Attempts at deception are fine! He lied because he cares so much about surfboards… well about his surfboards.

SORRY I COULD NOT RESIST.

Really pricing is not very relative to the standard Board and neither are the reactions…Hang in there Mike might slap em a bit !! http://www.geocities.com/wunderboyi/ninetysixpercent.html
