I got an 8ft McTavish Carver with 3 FCS fin plugs. A hybrid/speed egg type board. It came with a set of G-5 fins. They seem OK so far but I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a different FCS fin set for this type of board.

Howzit Surffish, try the G-AM’s or the OCCY’s Aloha, Kokua
Kokua gives some good general advice. I use the AMs in bigger surf. Changing the trailing fin size makes a big difference on how loose or stiff the board feels. It really all depends on the types of waves you are riding, your surfing style/ability/weight and the board itself. Eight feet is very long for a tri-fin…for a board that long I prefer and 2+1 hybrid setup…cross breed between a single and thruster…you may want to consider replacing the center plugs with a stock single fin box. If you plan to keep the board a while it will be worth it…but the fins are not cheap so the board must be really worth it for you to pursue that option.
see the attached pic…this is my well overhead surf semi-gun setup…
Thanks for the input. Here is the background info:
39 years old 6ft / 165lb
Decent longboarder transitioning down to smaller boards
Ride beachbreaks in Oregon and Washington.
I understand that many boards come stock with the G-5s. I was wondering if there is a better fin for this size and shape.

Ah, new information. The G-AM will probably feel pretty tight. If you don’t have a 2+1 set up. I’d go with the K2.1s. But, with an 8’ board your size 2+1s are probably the way to go.
ok…on the cheap, you can buy a larger trailing fin like a AM, or Rusty and keep the G5 up front…I use that set up a lot when the waves get good (head high+)…
but replacing fcs plugs with a fin box is not really that difficult and you will get a much more versatile setup due to the slide adjustment a box gives you.
