I am building my first board a 6’6" Fish I am going to run a twin set up. I order FCS Fusions plugs the other day not thinking about it and ordered 0 degree cant plug. What are the down falls of using these plugs on a twin? I know this may be a dumb question but any help will be appreciated. Thanks
If you put a bunch of V in the tail that'll be the correct set anyway. Fin cant was set perpindicular to V panels a lot back in the day.
Alright thanks allot I appreciate it. What does everyone usually run on the fishes they shape???
Are you making a twin fin or a fish? There is a difference. Even amongst fish there are quite a few variations: Lis fish, retro fish, round nose fish, and so on.....
The advice above on the twin fin is solid. The old twinnies frequently had vee in the tail. My retro twin fins are verrry different from the twins of today. The fin cant (angle aka tilt) was commonly 3 to 5 degrees back then. 3 degrees used to be the norm. Most of mine were wing swallows with heavy sharp vee at the tail cut which served as a quasi third fin. The boards go good.
If you're after a fish you should look around and see what appeals to you. I would NOT set the Fusions in so the fins are straight up and down regardless of what you decide upon. It will work, BUT it will work BETTER if you rout the Fusions to allow for at least 3 degrees tilt using a protractor on your bottom.
Fusions come in 0, 5, and 8 degrees, and the 8 degree cants are frequenly used on bottoms with heavy concaves. The 5 degree is the most frequently used and the 0 degrees are for rear fins or boards that have heavy vee planes like previously mentioned. Boards with more tilt lead around easier on cutbacks, but fish with longer based keels are a somewhat different animal altogether.
If you want a flat bottom board, you can cheat a bit with your 0 degree Fusions by routing slightly deeper than shimming them so the angle allows for 3 degrees. If you decide to do this instead of exchanging them, you don't want to grind a bunch of the flange on the stringer side of the Fusions. It will be better to set them in so the rail side of the flanges are asmidge low than do some fill before glassing. You could fill then sand some using Red DEvil lightweight spackle but be sure it is fully cured before any glassing happens. Or you can use Q cell, some milled fibers and resin and fill and do some clean up sanding before glassing the bottom.
Good luck and have fun.
