I have a 9’0 Stewart that has “box” fins for the side fins as well as the normal box fin in the center. I am guessing that these are called boxes. They don’t adjust forward and backward, but the fins are held in by a slot in the front and a allen screw in the back. I only ask because I have not heard much about these on this page. Do you know what to call my side fins? When building my new board should I consider these over FCS? Price comparison? Thanks

That is the system that you are describing.
Goofy foot,>>> Stewart uses Future Fins in their boards. That is the system that you are > describing. For side fins, its probably 6 of one, half dozen of another. For both you need to get a set-up kit – so, when you do it, you will be married to one or the other. FCS makes a jig for center fins, as well as supplies longboard fins to match. I have had, and many others have had abundant problems with losing fins for the FCS center mount. In my opinion, nothing beats a box in the center. Shine http://users.leading.net/~shine

The nice feature on the futures is that they install quickly and under the glass. FCS take more tools and more time and I feel are more prone to problems than Future. FCS also charges too much for their product (in my opinion) and are a pain in the butt to deal with. You can get a future jig and router (laminate trimmer) for around $130, I don’t know what FCS currently charges but when I hooked up with them 4 years ago it was $90 or $95 for their tool kit. Even though the Future kit is more if you plan on building boards on a regular basis the time you save using the future set up is worth the bucks, and besides you get an $85 dollar laminate trimmer to boot so you can install new counter tops for your wife to placate her after she threatens to throw you and your hobby out of the house. I would agree with Shine on the center box. Easy to do, universal, and a whole lot of fun. Good Luck, Matthew http://www.siempresurf.com
