“World Standard”? Or perhaps “World Champion” ? Just a little presumptuous in the wording
"FCS II The New Undisputed World Standard Fin System
2014 was quite a significant year… At the completion of the WSL season surfing crowned a new World Champion; Gabriel Medina. It was Gabriel’s maiden men’s World Title victory, but it also marked an impressive 5th World Title for the revolutionary FCS II fin system.
The 2014 Pipe Masters was a significant victory for Julian Wilson, because it not only handed him the Triple Crown trophy, it was also the 18th WCT win by a surfer riding the FCS II system. Watch the video
When your pros are going through 50 boards a year, all a fin system has to do is hold together for a couple weeks. FCS is obviously better than THAT, but as far as “best” is concerned the pro circuit isn’t a great test for that.
it would probably be cynical to think that monetary influences have anything to do with this
personally, liked the old FCS system with rigid Sunny Garcia carbon fins, especially for surfing shallow reefs - could scrub the fin(s) clean off on a shallow reef w/o damage to the fin plugs, as the SG fin tabs would break clean. First time I did that with Future boxes, the board squealed bloody hell and needed an infirmary.
saw a broken 5 fin this winter, Futures box system, clean snap along the small gap between back of the rear quad boxes and front of the trailing fin box. Rider one of those guys throwing away the ending on every wave trying some sort of air thingy. I’m going to sneak around the parking lot, when no one is looking, put ‘THINK FLOW’ stickers on deserving beach rides…
watching John Florence surf, the way he is progressing, think we’ll soon see fins in other places besides his tail…hell, maybe we’ll see them on his tail…
