FCS to LokBox fish conversion

I currently have a Mike Daniel’s Lis-style twin fish that came with FCS. I would like to convert the board to LokBox. This is for several reasons including; strength of the FCS plugs to hold such a large fin and lack of FCS twin fin selection. I have surfed the board with the FCS MRX fiberglass fins and Rainbow’s Rocket Fish fins. With the MRX fins the board had a good bit of snap in the turns but lacked down the line speed and really needed to be surfed off the back foot in turns. With the Rainbow’s the board had good drive but the turns are so much more drawn-out that the wave shuts down before I can finish most of my turns. With both types fins the board is a bit tricky to surf backside. The board has only been, and will be mostly, used in Virginia Beach and Outer Banks beach break conditions ranging from 1’ to 5’. The board is a Lis-style twin fin fish (6’-0" x 22 1/2" x 2 7/8") with a slight v out the back. I saw some photos of a conversion that Jim did on the Surfer forum (pics attached). Has anyone else done a conversion and could you reccomend a glasser in the Virginia Beach/OBX area that has a good deal of experience with LokBox? Thanks for the input fellas.

They could probably tell you where the closest shop to you is that’s set up to do Lokbox. From there you just sand down an area around the plugs big enough to accept the patch you’ll put over the boxes. Use rough grit like 80 min. to remove as much hotcoat as possible without going through. Use the original holesaw that they provide to re-drill around the plugs removing the white ring of resin. Make sure to drill all the way down. Now use something like a chisel and insert it into the plug and with one quick sideways jolt you should be able to pop the plug loose and pull it out. From there they will just install the boxes as usual, only they will need to apply hotcoat to the glass patches, then sand, and re-gloss if needed. Thanks

Hey Spooky,

I’d check with Tim Nolte down in NC. He does LokBox and has converted other boards for me. (Recently turned a thruster into a quad for me, but that was Futures) He does excellent work and is a stand up guy (252) 491-2590

Good luck

Thanks for the help Jim!
