Hey…
So I just finished laminating the deck on my 2nd project. Somehow it got a few little dirty smudges on it…I wouldnt have a clue how…somewhere between it curing (UV Cure) and putting it back on the racks…
Just wondering if trying to dab at it with acetone and a rag would damage anything?
Cheers

A lot of the time these smudges are dirty spots in the cloth that you don’t see until after the lam. Scrape at it a little with a razor blade to see if it’s really just on the surface, 'cause if it’s down in the fiber it’s not coming out. If it IS on the surface, an acetone wipe with a CLEAN cloth (or glass scraps) might get it off. Any pro glassers got tips?
…use first styrene monomer that is more “friendly” with the lam
but half of the dirt not go sometimes with the monomer so use acetone
use a fast move to prevent the stick of the rag or cotton cloth or paper to the lam
.use White and new one
like MD you can use acetone
.have in mind that is very little acetone
.dont put the acetone in the lam directly put it on the rag
-if you use premium fiberglass the problem is not in between the fibers
if you use whatever fiberglass or S2 glass sometimes you can find some strands that are like Grey or Black about a few cm long
Thanks for the replys fellas…
Yea its definately smudges after its been laminated…I could have been the culprit…My hands may have had something on them…
I’ll try using some scrap glass and jst try and dab at it quickly with a small amount of acetone…

i would strongly recommend against using acetone. acetone will break down the resin. it is safer to use paint thinner on a rag to wipe spots / finger prints off. when touching / moving the board before it is finished, use wax paper.

Good thing it was on the surface. I had some dirty cloth, and a couple black smudges showed up after the cure…
acetone will not degrade the resin enough to make it noticeably weaker, often if you have dirty acetone on your gloves and you touch the board it will leave a yellowish smudge on the foam that wont appear till after you laminate. this was happening to me for a while at work, we had yellow prints on a whole batch of boards when we were running low on acetone- my boss wasnt too happy.
if they are black smudges than it could be fibers in the cloth that got oil on them in the mfg process- are you using direct size or silene E? direct seems to have more of an issue with this (i think because its not heat treated). if it’s oil in the fibers it wont come out if the lam is cured- next time if you notice it while laming you can take a fresh razor and cut out the effected strands and it should be ok.
otherwise just wipe with clean acetone like mentioned above and it should come out.
good luck
Ahh its all good
Hot coated…
I jst dabbed a bit with acetone…I only use 1 layer of 4 ounce on deck and bottom anyway so strenght isnt really of huge importance i spose you could say…
thanks tho:P
