did anyone else see the shark tank show with the fiber fix product? it looks pretty intriguing. water-activated resin w/ fiber tape. seems like it could be a rad patch kit if it’s water tight. on the show they said you could seal leaky pipes w/ it and it’s sandable when cured. their website has no real info on materials/ingredients so if i hadn’t seen shark tank i wouldn’t really be in to it.
has anyone tried it?
is water-activated resin possible for surf applications?
i’m not affiliated at all with the product. just thought it may have some potential
Didn’t see the show, but I looked at the website. Looks like the stuff they make casts with when you break an arm or leg. Soak it in water then wrap it around whatever you need to support. Dries hard and looks like fiberglass.
you got me searching and the fiber fix looks exactly the same as stuff on casts. 3m scotchcast tape is water-activated resin on cloth for casts. here’s a link to some. that is 4-inches wide and 4 yards long for $10. digging around all the fine print it says there’s about a 3-minute cure time, cooler water slows curing, warmer water speeds it. once you open the package, that’s it, room humidity will even start curing it.
Sounds a bit like the stuff we used to use to fix leaky mufflers. Water activated and it set up similar to a glass/bondo feel. I think it’s called Muffler Bandage?
That stuff is just cast material. I’ve used it on sailboats for a quick jury-rig if something breaks, used it to repair a mast for wind surfing. The stuff is not waterproof, is designed to allow air to move through the cast to keep someone with a fracture more comfortable while wearing it. 3M Scothcast is probably the best. Has no application to surfboard repair, better to use cloth and resin if you need something to be watertight.
i don’t know why you’d go through this process instead of normal ding repair w/ cloth, but could you lay down the scotchcast patch and then filler/hotcoat over it to make it water tight? just curious.
the water activated resin is what i want to know more about. i couldn’t find anything about it though.
On a similar theme, probably not the same material? I had a water proof epoxy emergency pipe wrap kit that was supposed to be used for naval submarine pipe damage repair. Never did try it out, havn’t seen it in the pile for years, this thread will get me digging around to find it. There are waterproof epoxies available for wet, underwater boat repairs. I had some once that was marketed thru boat stores, it came in a palm sized twist top tub and had a beige paste consistency, I only tried it dry.
What this sounds like to me is an idea my friends and I tossed around for a product in our repair shop. we wanted to figure out some kind of on-water patch kit that you could use to seal your board and keep surfing without ever having to get out of the water. The final consensus was that we’d just be best off using two part marine epoxy putty that they use in boat repair since once you knead it together it will cure even when submurged. Stuff is expensive as all hell though… this seems like the way better option if you had a little dry bag you could keep a small amount in. Get a ding, just tape it real quick and submerge the board - can’t help but wonder just how rapidly curing the stuff is
