any applications of fiberglass mat in surfboard building? reinforcing, laminating? anything?
I’ve seen fins made out of it, no reason why not, more cost efficient, although structurally not as good as a fabric laminate. As for boards, I can only think it would be good for making it stronger, ridiculously heavier, but stronger nonetheless.
Fiberglass mat is on it’s way out as a structural component in most composites. Just adds thickness to a laminate and little integrity. Even boats are dropping it.
Having repaired a bad delam using mat, yes, it makes the board very strong, but very hearvy. I wouldn’t advise it.
Not really, unless you want to be doing a ‘correct’ repair on a popout. The fun part about mat is that it really doesn’t form around corners too well, is misery to sand and won’t deform for those somewhat difficult bits of lamination. Hope that’s of use doc…
