fin box for futures and fcs

hi, i thought you all might be interested in these boxes , they fit future fin or fcs , the thing i like about them is you could cut off the ends of the future side fins to give a lot of fore and aft movement,

i don/t know who makes them or whether you have all seen them before buts it a first for me, more choice is all good and a set only cost just a bit more than a fcs set , pete

Hi peteuk, Very aware of this box. It’s been out for almost 4 years. It’s designed by John Fields from Honk Kong. The main problem with this box is when you put in a FCS Fin the box fails in the middle which causes the plastic sleeve that covers the top to break. The box is to long to work well with the lateral locking pressure of a FCS Fin.

hi, thanks for the info, the box looks really strong and well made with reinforcement ribs in the middle underneath, maybe this is the mk 2 version , anyway thanks again i have two sets to try so will see how they go , pete

Hi peteuk, The box you have is the second version. The system may hold up in your nice balsa boards, but fail quickly in PU boards that I have taken them out of for some guys to see how everything works.

yeah, i was going to suggest looking on the bottom for “made in china”…looks cheap…looks pinner.

From what I hear it was originally designed to go into chinese boards slated to flood our shores. The idea was a universal box that took Futures and FCS hence the name “F” box. You can imagine the names this industry has come up with for it starting with the letter “F” lol. The factory there threw in the towel (on the surfboards) so now they are trying to sell it here. Seems kind of cheesy IMO as it seems very narrow (not much face for glass to adhere to or to hold up larger fins) and it’s long and dead flat. Not sure how that will fit into the curvature of a surfboard without getting the glass stripped off (not many boards are dead flat through the fin area) and it uses that same old screw famous for stripping. Good luck wit dat.

Exactly…imagine being able to ship lots of boards without fins. Retailer’s dream. In theory only.

Hi peteuk,

Try contacting Seabase for who makes those boxes. They carry those Chinese “Boardworks” boards and the fin boxes you’re looking for might have been designed specifically for those pop outs.

Not sure but worth a try…

hi greenlight, the boxes were supplied from seabase here in the uk, i did/nt think to ask where they are made at the time but will next time i go there ,

i was impressed by the dual role of future and fcs , i know lokbox is a dual role box as well but i have several sets of future fins that i can now try in the same board as well as the fcs or mix it up a bit ,vector sides and h2 rear or hatchet rear and h2 sides something that has/nt been possible previously for me ,

the box is 6 ins, only 3/8 longer than a lokbox and 1/8 longer than a future box ,all these boxes are flat so i can/t see a problem with installation reguarding it being too long and flat,

i just like the cross over available between the two fin systems , i really would/nt make a board with future boxes just so i can use my future fins but now i can use both fin systems which is ideal for me ,

if the boxes do break up i will be sure to report here, pete

Howzit peteuk, Is it possible that the box is a FCS fin box? The fin boxs they make are just a bit narrower then Bahne boxes and only take FCS fins. When they came out with them I received some from our rep and I noticed right off they were not the same as Bahne. I think it was a big mistake since FCS longboard fins are about twice the price of a Bahne or Fins unlimited fin. They should have made them the same size so they would be universal and take any fin on the market. Aloha,Kokua

hi kokua, i think the boxes are as lokbox said f boxes , the bag they gave me to put them in said f box side 20 pieces so that is what i think they are,

the idea behind them is sound whether they last the distance is an other matter, i don/t know until i try them ,

i have tried fin solution boxes , which take fin solution fins and fcs ,i ground down a rear future hatchet fin to fit the rear box,but a box that takes the two most popular fin systems ,in principal is a really good idea,

i think lokboxes are the best in terms of holding down the fin and strength but they are not as popular over here as future and fcs, pete

“all these boxes are flat”

Hi Pete, put a Lokbox upside down on a flat surface and you’ll see that they have a bit of rocker built in. Not much, but enough to help keep an adequate amount of glass over the box during sanding on boards with deep concaves. While maybe not as popular as futures, guys like Fluid Juice and Black and White do a large part of their production with it. You can also find them through Local Hero and Nigel Semmens. These are some of the more popular labels in the west country…
