I just glassed my first set of pro-box fin boxes, I really like the set up but i accidently got resin in a couple of the fin screws. Any tips on how to get them out? The fin screws were in the box so its just in the tops of them. Thanks, Kevin
small, thin sharp objects to chip it out. Gotta small drill bit and a drill? The screws won’t work the same as before the resin insert. They may be a little stripped. Order a replacement set from probox. Been there - done that!
Next time make sure the screw tops are plugged REALLY good with balls of masking tape jammed in. Good luck.
sadly made the same error with the same finboxes myself a couple of boards back.
one option is a really small, finely threaded screw; carefully screw that into the resin filled hex head in the grub screw and give it a pull; if you threaded nicely, it’ll pop right out. A tap and die set with counter threads works great for this because the grub screw will start to back out instead of being continually threaded into the box.
other alternatives are dental picks or awls…they all work. It’s gonna take a little elbow grease, but you’ll get the resin out.
best to wait until the resin is good and solid before trying any of these approaches.
I DON’T recommend using a drill…this is one of those things that requires some finesse.
Next time you’ll know to either watch how much resin you use so you don’t fill them, or carefully tape over the heads. Another option that I’ve used with some succuess is to just put some wax in each head before pouring the resin into the resin dam. Another good option (which actually does a great job of minimizing air bubbles) is to fill the boxes with a bit of resin first; say 1/2oz, then place in the box and fill up the remaning space with a syringe. Because you’re putting it in with the syringe, it’s real easy to get it just full as opposed to overfilled and you can top it up as necessary to account for any seepage that may occur.

Thanks for the info guys. So something like an Ice pick? Ill try when I get off work, ill let you guys know how it went in the morning when I get back. Thanks again, Kevin
Dear Friend,
Easy busy! Take a nail and sharpen its tip, then get a hammer and work like a greek marble sculptor - hard and gentle. Good Luck!!

this is precisely how they do it on the ProBox installation video. i certainly hope everyone using ProBox for the first time has seen it at least thrice before!
I leave the screws on and never had a problem. Resin wont stick to metal and as soon as you turn the screw it breaks off.
i had the same issue with repairing my 6’2" next time I will use masking tizz-ape. I had futures, so i used a nail tap and a hammer to gently crack the dried resin, then used a metal pick to scrape the pieces out.
Had the same problem on my first board, now I’ll remember to plug them with blue tack or wax as the resin got under the tape. no problem to remove that resin though, use something thin and sharpe, you can get a tool that is basically a sharpe spike with a handle, i forget what it’s called but comes in very handy, be careful if it in the thread, use a needle of a pin try to remove just the resin and not the plastic, get the screw moving slowley then screw them in and out a few times and they will clear the tread.
worst case scenario and the plastic thread of the box does get damaged badly and the screw no longer bites, get a slightly bigger screw, say switch from imperial to metric and re-thead the hole.
Hey guys thanks for the tips. I got the first screw out and while trying to get the last one out I pushed the box under the lam. I ended up pulling the whole thing out and doing it how it should have been done the first time. Does anyone know where to get more syringes for the resin?
Howzit Mecca, Try your local Pharmacy for them, they won’t sell you the needle part but I but them for about a dollar or two with no questions asked.Aloha,Kokua
If you have trouble finding a syringe just let me know as we have them and can send you one [or more]. The brand that we ship with the install kits is commonly available at pet shops as well, I guess they use them for feeding birds or something like that. It has a curved tip on it.
Here is a link to one of many places on the web that sell them.

We do sell them but it might be cheaper to try to find them closer to home to save on the shipping!
