FIN BOX !

the fin box is totally in, but it is raised up alot! should i sand that down?

yes...unless you want it to stick out

just dont sand the box too much so that the base of the fin is sticking out...im assuming youve already glassed it in?

yeah the boxes are glasses in but the fins are  not in yet

props  for the replys guys

Congrats you did it right: it is supposed to stick up - now you sand it down flush. Grind on!

Hi lindsey, If the center channel is raised up more the 1/8 to 3/16 then the fin will stick up. But if you have alot of tail rocker and the box is sticking up alot at the back half then your ok, because the fin tab will be in the front. If your box is up more than 3/16 then the fin may have a slight wobble. Don't change the fin depth by cutting off the bottom of the fin, because now your fin tab will fall below the inside plate channel and never lock tight. Just leave the fin box alone and ride the board and remember next time to route alittle deeper. Yes sand the box flush to the board surface.Hope this helps my friend, enjoy your new board. First you said “box”, now it’s “boxes”. Is this a single fin, or something else?

alright awesome

thanks guys!

oh and sorry no it is boxes as in 3:)

you may have overheated the install.

this will cause the resin to exotherm

(foam up),net results is a raised box.

Aloha,

I recall my first finbox ( single fin )install  - I routed too deep and then while puring the resin it lifted the finbox

and I had to put weights on it to keep it down from floating.

same thing happened in my first two leash plugs installs.

I solved the problem by routing the hole no deeper than 1/16 than needed ( usually I route the exact depth !!)   and this creates a solid base for the finbox/leash plug to sit/stick on and they  won't raise .

hope this helps...

Lee

that’s a good tip lee.

also the main reasons for box float is air under the box or plug.

to eliminate this air: wet out the bottom of the box with the install mix first.

this breaks the static surface that air clings to.

another is how you put the resin in the hole.

there are different apps for different systems.

nex t: move the plug or box around a bit(rotate,shift,etc.).

lastly,i don’t use footings or silly putty for my jig placements/settings…i prefer masking tape.

same for the hold down on my jigs for cutting box/plug holes…tape that is.

hope this clears things some…herb
