You got a couple options. Treat it like a ding and build it back up with cloth/resin and sand it back down flush, or just re-foil the leading edge of the fin back past the damaged area and have a fin with about a 1/4" less chord width
Or just keep riding it, I’d doubt you’d notice much difference. It’s solid glass, it’s not going to hurt it.
This.
Or, just fill the notch with resin if the sight of that offends you so.
Thanks for the help guys…
It’s mostly a cosmetic thing.
I haven’t used these fins in a while and plan on selling them to fund some other fins/boards
chrisp,
I have had some split on the tip where the foil is thinnest, so be careful. I don’t know if this is the best way to fix, but i sanded back the messed up area, and filled in the area with resin/glass powder
you might try a drop or two of super glue to clear up the white, crushed glass. thinned resin should do it too, but super glue is a bit easier. do as told above, just sand around the damage and build it back up and refoil. should be able to do it where you can’t tell it was messed up.
tape one side of the fin
styrene the booboo's
choped volan and uv resin will build it back up, fast
reshape it and shoot it with clear,,,,,,Done
Guy makes some wickid fins
exactly what size and model is it?
caution !!!!!!!
most factory fins are coated in acrylic not glossed and polished !
so after you fix it..............fine sand it to say 180 or 220 and re-surface the fin w/ clear acrylic spray..............rattle cans work if you know what you're doing.
herb
Thanks again for the help...
I've got some acrylic spray so, I'll try that after I build it back up...
Ken, they are the ones on the bottom left corner here:
http://proboxhawaii.com/pages/fins/fins_page7.html
I loved them when I used to surf a quad. I just haven't been on a quad in a while and I don't see myself going back.
sand lightly with 150 and 220....done deal...everything else is overkill...
bring the fins to the next Sway's get together and trade for something else......
pretend you fixed it
after rubbing
some wax on it
while girls
are watching
you get ready
in the parking lot.
when they ask you ‘why you wax your fin?’
say ; ‘to start conversations with Girls’.
…ambrose…
Well, I was going to say that Ken and Herb nailed it, but after Ambrose’s post I think I will go out and nick some of my fins.
I just haven’t been on a quad in a while and I don’t see myself going back.
What!!!???!!! Do tell…
At least I now know why Ambrose was always hanging around the lot waxing his fin…
Hahah, not any time soon in small waves at least.
I’ve been diggin’ the 5 fin setup…
Beats sections like a quad and can go up the face. Also, it’s got brakes.
hahaha, that might not go over so well with my wife
well try using it to start
a conversation with your wife.
life is easier with geometry.
…ambrose…
the shortest distance
between two points
is a waxed fin.
Where you puttin’ the center fin Chris? Back like a tri, or in the middle of the rears like Griffin, or???
Gotta say though - I’ve been having success “stalling” my quads… fin tweaking, foot placement, and more experience stomping on the tail…
Can you feel any difference in top end, high pocket speed?
Stoked for you on dialing in your quads! They definitely work and work well when sussed out. Nathan Fletcher is certainly proof of that. Also, I’ve heard that Bruce Irons has been getting some quads lately.
My 5 fin is as close to Griffin as I can get.
I finally got a set of actual GG 5 fins too… Bingo! Projection like a rail finned quad, control like a thruster.
The GG fins are so much better than the mixmatched set I was running. And, I was stoked on the fins I had in there before.
Regarding high pocket speed, not really, maybe a little… The benefits of the center fin outweight any loss for me tho.
Again, this isn’t for bigger waves, just my daily driver.
The setup is still really fast I think as a result of having the side fins way out on the rail…
I was surfing a junk beachbreak a few months back on the 5 fin setup. It was a consistent peak with short mushy lefts and longer steeper rights. The pack was parked lined up for the rights and I was about 15-20 feet over as if I was going for the lefts. I would take off and go right coming from way behind the peak. One quick, high pump then to the bottom and around the section and I’d be into the lip right where the pack was looking to take off. I don’t think those guys (all better surfers than I) expected me to go right and be able to make the section… No way I would have been able to do that on a thruster or at least any thruster I’ve ever surfed before.
Sounds great Chris - Right on!
Good food for thought…
I may have to consider adding a center fin box to one of my older boards when I get caught up. Great way to check out the difference.
I love my Griff 5 fin. But for comparison sake, how wide is your tail and what is the toe-in on the sides? Same as GG?
