Recently I tried my brothers new board at punchy 2ft Sands in Isla Vista and was amazed to find that his Al Merrick FCS fins worked really well for me. I had been using small fins and more recently soft-flex Futures(JC1)for small surf, that session changed my entire thinking. The Merricks gave so much drive off the base I couldn’t believe it, at the same time if I trimmed it felt like they were dragging really hard. I’m wondering if the Merrick’s only work in punchy waves or all around mushers also. My basic thinking is that the fuller base gave me the squirty drive I’d been looking for, now I’m wondering if I should mess with the flex or just stay with the plastics. Any ideas; do fuller bases work good in mushy waves or just in zippers? I’m thinking about buying the small merricks from Futures as an all around fin but leaning towards some material other than the composite (already tried all the RTMs). Anyone have experience with the Future’s glass fins?
