I’ve just fallen in love with a 7’6" egg after a few years on a longboard … the egg was made for me (7’6" - 15 1/2 - 22 3/4 - 17 3/4 - 3 1/8), an intermediate surfer, here in New England where the waves are more crumbly than not.
I love this board in waist to shoulder, a mix of beach and point breaks.
The fin is a 9.25 Skip Frye, recommended by the folks at True Ames; it seems to drive down the line nicely but a little hard to turn down the line after popping up. Maybe that’s my technique?
Any suggestions as to if this size fin is a good match would be appreciated. I like riding this as a single as I’m a mellow kind of surfer.
first i’d move the fin around a bit. try setting it back an inch or so from where it currently is and see if it might turn a little easier.that fin is a great template and foil, but has no flex. if moving it around doesn’t help, opt for a 9" liddle flex fin…
A 9.25 or a 9" fin is pretty large for a 7’6. A 7’’ would probably work as well, and it would make the board turn easier also. A smaller fin would proly work better in smaller crumbly surf. IMHO some flex can help with the whitewash making it less harsh and wobbly.
I would tend to agree with Mook in that the fin is too big - especially for standard east coast waves. Plus, the shot you posted looks like you have the fin set way forward - maybe too far?
I wouldn’t go bigger than a 7 - 7 1/2" Frye Flex type or cut-away.
If you try it with the smallest side bites you can get (ala FCS G-L’s), try with a 6 - 6 1/2" cut-away. You might be surprised - even for a “mellow kind of surfer…”.
if you move that fin around and find that you “feel” it more than the board then drop in size. a 9" liddle flex would probably be good, or perhaps an 8 incher. if you do drop to 8 or 7" then do move it back for sure…
So…I was going to tell you that your fin was too big…But a closer look at the 6-5 and 6-3 Egg that I’m currently experimenting with and I changed my mind. Both those boards Have 7" fins. One is a second I got a deal on and the other is a brand new Larry Allison 7" Retro fin.
Maybe I just like 7" fins…Maybe I gotta put that Retro fin into the Eight footer and play around…
Fin quiver anyone?..
Hmm…I wonder how that 9.25 fin would work in one of my boards…
I personally would use 2+1 only if the rails are hard at the tail. 3" sides and a 7" cut-away worked well for me when I rode a 7’6" egg. Move the center up so that the front-most edge is even with the back edges of the sides.
