Fin for solid balsa 9' 4" What would you use?

Hi guys, I am making fins for three boards. The first two I have good idea of what I want. On the last one I am stumped and would appreciate any suggestions.

This board still needs about 12 hours of shaping but I would like to make all of my itchy fin mess on one day.

Solid balsa 9’4" N 14.5" M 22" T 12.5" NR 5" TR 3" For 3-10ft OBSF

Thanks, Ian

Most of my big guns are quads, but if my sando works out this may end up on the wall on big days. The paper fin is off of Doc Hazards 10’ red Parmenter(Looks sexy but I didn’t like the rocker and the rails were way to hard for OB)The wood fins base is a little small for me. The paua shell is .003 micro venner for a logo.

Take care, Ian

Where did you order your paua from Lava? Starting to put together supplies for another board and that is on the shopping list.

The paua shell is from InlayUSA.com a 3"by5" costs $12.50 for the micro venner. I would recommend getting the natural shell and paint the bottom dark blue. The venner is so thin I plan to just glue it on and glass. I may go with my the logo below or a bulls eye.

Take care,

Ian

I was thinking about having my logo laser cut but the way you have your balsa cut out to your logo might work as well. Just put the paua below the balsa instead of having to worry about match cutting both or laying the logo on top. Cheaper since you wouldn’t have to pay for laser cutting. Balsa is relatively cheap so you could afford to make a few mistakes.

The walnut logo was much easier than I thought to make. First make a copy of your logo then use Super77 spray glue to mount on your walnut. Then cut out with a single sided razor blade knife (carpet trimmer knife@Home Depot) and CA glue the walnut to the balsa. Now cut out your logo from the balsa and flip the balsa over. Push the balsa down until the logo stands proud from the balsa and sand flush. Turn the balsa over to the top and touch up with elmers glue and balsa dust. The paua shell is as thick as three sheets of paper and can be cut with scissors or a knife. I may just glue my paua to the board after the Lam and then hot coat.

Take care,

Ian

I mistakenly thought that in your first pic the logo was a hole through the balsa. That info is super helpful. Thanks
