Fin Grade Plywood in Santa Cruz?

For the Santa cruz folks,

Does anyone know where in town to get some high grade 7 or 11 ply 3/8 inch plywood? I did an archive search, and think this is what I’m looking for. Big Creek and San Lorenzo don’t cary baltic birch, and their marine ply is a 1/2" 5 layer ply with lots of voids when I checked it out.

Thanks.

Pat

'Bit of a drive but MacBeath Hardwoods in Berkeley has a wide variety. I bought a bunch of BS 1088 (best marine grade) there a few years back. The San Francisco store does not stock it if I recall.

I’d bet if you walk into most any custom cabinet shop, they could tell you where, or get it for you.

I am a flooring contractor in S.F and I use 7ply 3/8"& 4ply 1/4" baltic birch at work. The brand is called halex plywood. It is cheaper than the finish grade stuff(15$ for a 4’ by 5’) and has waterproof glue. Some times it comes with X’s printed on one side, so I glue the 1/4" up in two pieces and get 1/2" 8ply birch fins. Ask at a flooring store for Halex underlayment.Maybe some day they will finish building that Home Depo on 41st Ave at the old Kmart site. Also hobby stores carry ply wood and balsa.

Have fun,

Ian

call santa cruz yachts and see if they may have some extra sitting around. they’re in the phone book.

Thank you for all the responses everyone.

I guess my path will be

  1. Try santa cruz yachts, thanks pcinsc

  2. Call a cabinet shop per easternpacific

  3. Try a flooring store for 7 ply 3/8" halex. Thank you Lavarat

  4. As a last resort go to Berkeley. Thanks for THAT info Chrisa. I’ve got a friend in Oakland who’s been bugging me to come visit for a while anyway.

  5. Template and Foil some fins!

I find it in my buddies cabinet shop scrap heap. I also have a 4x8 baltic birch ply from Home Cheepo, too. Not the same quality as from the cabinet shop, but you get a lot of practice from a 4x8 sheet. Mike

Surely they must have Michaels up that way… the birch ply they sell is good plus you can usually find a 40% off coupon in the sunday paper or mail…

Hi Shipman,

Closest Michaels is 19 miles away in San Jose over the 17. Closer than Berkeley though. We’re really in our own little world here. I’m going to try to get on the case tomorow or tuesday. If I find a good source, I’ll post it here so that others in the area will benefit. Btw, those fins look nice!

Pat, found a 2’x3’ sheet of marine ply in my garage you can have if you want it. It marine grade, mahogany in color. BUT its 6mm and thin but good stuff. So, you have to likely glue two pieces together to get the thickness desired. Call me after 6pm at 650-557-9454 if you are interested. I’m up the coast in Pacifica. Chris.

the “Midwest” brand craft ply sold in Michaels is the same stuff sold in hobby shop (for model airplane builders). There’s got to be a hobby shop somewhere in the Santa Cruz area.

If not, try

www.nationalbalsa.com

Their ‘finland birch’ ply is very good, void free (at least I haven’t found any yet). Up to 1/2" thickness x 12" wide, up to 48" long. Kinda pricey, but if you can’t find someone locally, or hate messing with 4’x8’ or 5’x10’ sheet stock (it can be hell to rip that stuff by yourself if your shop is not equipped for it), its an option.

Max, Keith, thanks for those additional pointers.

Chris, I PM’d you. Thanks everyone for your help.
