I found it on an early 70’s Hobie Sunrise Funboard and it’s obviously broken. The base measures 6.25" and I’d like to get a replacement that fits properly in the box. I assume this was a popular setup at one time, but that’s long before my time and I’m having trouble finding a new one. If anyone can provide info on where I can get a replacement or even the name of this fin, I’d appreciate it.
Josh, I don’t think it’s the Wave Set Fins System, but rather the “Guidance G” system that was in vogue forsome time in the '70s.
The system worked without any screw, you just inserted the fin in the box and pulled it back and it locked. Difficult to explain if you never saw one. I had this system on a Weber “Ski” at the time…
In almost all of the postings on Swaylocks regarding fins, haven’t seen much about the safety issue. I’m focused on this after having suffered the mother of all fin lacerations a year ago surfing mellow 3-4 foot dawn patrol surf. Sliced open my right hand so badly, I needed 10 stitches down in the deep meat, then another 15 on the surface. Got myself to the emergency room early and got a big blast of Lidocaine and great work by the attending Doc. Out of the water for 3 weeks, physical therapy for a month. If I’d been on a surf a million miles from nowhere, I’m not sure Betadine and a bunch of butterfly closures would have made the grade.
Now all my boards are retrofitted with Protecks. Yes, they only have a limited range of designs and foils, but if that gash had been on a major artery…well, use your imagination.
Just one more thought about fin design that ought to be taken into account.
Fishguts, here is an old ad for CON SURFBOARDS back then. If you look closely at the very bottom of the ad, you’ll notice the Guidance G system being mentionned. Unfortunately, I can’t help you as to where you could find a replacement nowadays.
