Fin placement for keel fins

Hey there,

I’m a new member, and I’ve only made a couple of very basic boards before so please excuse any not-so-bright questions.

I’m looking for anyone who can walk me through the placement of the keels on a traditional “Lis/Frye-style” fish, and a bonzer like the one posted almost 2 years ago(!) by the guy from Free Spirit.

Although new to shaping I am a journeyman carpenter and I have a good grasp of working with my hands, so lay it on me!

Thanks a lot!

J-K,

I line up the rear edge with the tips. Usually, around 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 inches off the rail. And, I line up the rear edge with top of the butt crack. Usually, around 6 to 6 1/2 inches from the tips. Double foiled fins no toe in, no cant. Single foil fins 1/8 inch toe in and 2 degrees cant. Do a search with your question and you will find lots of info. Mike

Thanks Mike.

This is the best forum I have ever found for all the fiddly questions!

You’re the best.
