Fin placement for SUP

I’ve just shaped my first SUP, 10 foot X 30 inch, copied old Starboard 10’5" Drive outline and plan shape (had to loose5" though as my foam was short).

I was told 4 fin is great for SUP, now I’m trying to figure placement, other than on the bottom at the back…

a big center fin helps a lot to stabilize the board while you’re just standing waiting for waves.  i’m going to put 5 boxes on my next board to keep the options open for different sea state conditions.

I like the idea of placing a center box about 6" from the tail to give you a few more options.  For a quad, depending on your tail rocker, I like to place the rear fins about 8" from the tail and the fore fins about 17 to 17.5" from the tail.

Aloha,

I’ve measured Paddle Surf Hawaii and C4 quad setups.

PSH 16" for front and rears 7 7/8 behind front. C4 was just slightly different. 16" and 8 1/8 behind fronts. Both quads with fins close to rail. About 1 3/8 off rail on both.

Quads really help huge SUPs come alive.

do you have a profile picture of the board or an APS pdf?

Would love to see what you came up with. How tall/heavy are you? Wondering about the size SUP I’m planning to build.

getting back on topic…

Single fin LBs typically have rounded tail section rails and 2+1’s LBs typically have a hard tail section rail… would a quad SUP work well with the rounded tail section rail that would typically be found on a single fin LB? i.e. I’m wondering about finning my upcoming SUP with probox’s for a quad configuration and putting the single fin center box in, but would a rounded tail section rail work for both configurations?

thanks

I decided to go with 17 1/2 and 8 inches. Now have 5 days under my belt in pretty idillic conditions,1 to 4 feet of swell warm water and no crowds.

Surfing wise so far so good, although it takes some getting used to after a short board!

I’m 6’6" and 205lb, so was thinking perhaps a bit more size could help, probably for chop, but we had a couple of pretty glassy days and the size felt good.
