Fin plug repair

Hello there im going to replace my fin plug that got ripped out, it is my first time and i have a  few questions and want some suggestions! Ive got threeoptions in my book. 1. Put the fin plug in place and qcell resin all around it to flush level then fibreglass patch and sand etc… 2. full the majority of the hole with foam leaving a circle hole for the fin plug, resin the fin plug in then fibreglass patch and sand etc… 3. full the whole hole in with foam, fibreglass patch etc… then re drill the hole and resin that in.

any suggestions would be great??? i have attached a few pics

What I usually do with repairs such as this is first, mix a batch of resin and q-cell, but make it on the thicker side with more q-cell then resin (this will help keep the weight down & makes it easier to re-drill the repair). Fill the repair and then sand smooth to the bottom. Next laminate a 4oz or 2 x 4oz patch over the repair (laminate, hotcoat). After sanding the repair smooth and flush proceed to installing the plug just as you would if you were doing it the first time around.

mgarbutt expalined the repair perfectly.

Please post pics of the repair process if you can for other Swaylockians to reference in the future.

That solid resin mix is a bitch to drill out. You could use pour foam, but I tape up the metal tube used to guide the borer bit, closing it off at the bottom, and use that to pour the resin around. Rotate and pull out the tube once the resin starts to kick. You don’t even have to drill the hole when you’re done… just cut the laminated/hotocated cloth around the edge of the hole. I level the board where the hole is, and fill up the ripped out foam perfectly flat with the top of the foam. Laminate over that.

I also use 2 layers of cloth… one cut to fit the cut-away cloth perfectly, the other to overlap. You need two layers of cloth.

So you use the hole saw and wrap with tape

No… I use the metal tube that serves as the guide that the borer bit fits

its at the bottom of the pick… it has the bit in it.
