FIN ROPE QUESTIONS

The photo didn’t come out so good but maybe you can answer my question any way. I’ve read lots of stuff in the archives that describe fin rope and give it names but it’s hard to know what’s what when starting out.

Rope A is very silky and fine. Soft to the touch ,threads stick together.

Rope B is coarse and tough.Threads do not stick together Both were purchased from Mitch’s when asked for fin rope.

What’s better ,stronger?

What are the pros and cons…

Thank you

Ray

Rope A: Single End Roving with a soft sizing. Single End Roving is one end of glass that has multiple filaments to create a specific yield (yield means how many yards of glass = 1 pound.) For instance 250 yield means 250 yards of glass = 1 pound. Used for filament winding, pultrusion, woven roving, Non-crimp products.

Rope B: Assembled Roving with a coarse sizing. Assembled rovings take multiple ends and bundles them together to form a specific yield. Also looks like rough handling. Gun Roving

Most of these items are sold by the pallet at a minimum, you are kind of stuck with what is available in your area. I would stick with a Single End Roving.

If your just a guy building a few try woven roving and just take it apart. Real cheap and the stuff works as good as anything. Just buy a yard and you’ll have enough for numerous fin jobs.

Hi Ray, I used to use type A, but I found it didn’t staturate well and/or trapped air bubbles. It really doesn’t add any strength, just a nice fillet. I now use chopped up cloth and mold it into a fillet under the cloth that supports the fin. Run a popsicle stick along it until the air is worked out and you get a perfect fillet.
