quick question for y’all: i just had a 6’8" single-fin egg shaped for me. STOKED! what size and type of fin should i look into purchasing? maybe a 8.5 Donald Takayama fin? anybody know about these rainbow flex fins and where they can be found? i’m in la jolla. any input would be greatly appreciated!
ZBH, Great topic and one that I hope gets tossed around alot. I also just recently got a 6’6 single fin egg. It’s shaped by my friend Craig Albers in San Diego. Look for pictures in the showcase real soon. I have an 8" fin with not much rake in there. It handles beautifully so I’d say anything in that size range (though not much bigger). Your going to love that board - mine feel so much different from a thruster. I am, however, starting to get curious as to how different fins would behave. I realize the only real way to find out is to try them but they aren’t cheap…and when the surf is good I tend to go with what I know. My questions to the forum on this same topic - given a shorter ( quick question for y’all: i just had a 6’8" single-fin egg shaped for > me. Try to get ahold of a 9" Greenough flex fin, no gloss and foiled thin. True Ames in Santa Barbara area makes the best ,but Fins Unlimeted [Bahne] in Encinitas makes a good one. Order one of those from Mitch’s in La Jolla. I do alot of single fin disc sliding. Check out M.P. @ 19yrs. old on a sweet little saucer ripping pre-groin Kirra circa 1970 in “Morning of the Earth”. On one wave he gets caught behind a section, trys to straighten off and gets blasted. His board flips over and you see his fin, and that’s the Greenough style fin!
What about fin positioning? I tried my 7’with a fin that size and feels like I need a bigger one. Gene Cooper comets are on the 10’’ scale. I don’t know if they are just too much, I guess it also depends on the fin shape.
I have a 6’6" egg and I’ve been using a 8.5" Tudor Karma fin. I usually position it around 9" up from the tail depending on wave size. I’d like to get a longer fin (9" or 10") and try pushing it up all the way to the end of the box to see what happens. Has anyone tried one of those cut-away fins with extreme rake? I’m curious as to how this type of fin would work on a short egg. I recently came across a Greenough Dolphin fin and another fin made by Wilderness. If I only had the money I’d try them all!
If youre looking for Rainbow fins, try their site, www.rainbowfins.com. Here you can find the TK flexfin, a volan fin with a sanded finish in different sizes. (They do mail orders.) On the egg I shaped I used a 8.5 TK flex glas on with good result, this is on a 15 tail. You can see the board on the boards picture link on this site. (a that time the fin was not glassed on yet). Good luck Peter Rijk.>>> quick question for y’all: i just had a 6’8" single-fin egg shaped for > me.
