Fin size

I just picked up my new long board a 9’6" with a concave nose with a box set up for the center fin and the FCS set for the side fins. My questions are, What type of fin and size should I use for the center box fin? Also, what will the different fin set up do if I ride it single fin or as a tri fin? Does the size matter for the center fin if I ride it as a single or tri fin set up? Thanks for your help Chad

Thanks for your help Chad My wife tells me size always matters…try a 7.5" & 8.5" cutaway with your three fin set up. Try them both w/ as a single fin for fun. you’ll see a definate difference in the amount of loosness and eas of turning with the shorter fins. If side slipping and 360’s are your thing then shorter is better. If traditional riding is more your style my preference is a 9" traditional fin with a moderate amount of rake. As for the side fins for FCS ask your local dealer for the small side fins for a longboard. (G-5’s are the standard for shortboards and they even make a set for the little grommet kids boards but your side fins are smaller than those.) Have some fun and experiment! What type of fin and size should I use for the center box > fin? I use a 10-inch Wingnut Long Rake fin (made by Rainbow) when I’m going single (which is mostly always). I also use one of my home-made 11-inchers sometimes. I use an 8-inch fin when combined with sidebiters. I would also recommend checking out Paul Jensen’s fins through this site. Very nice fins! Also, what will the different fin set up do if I ride it single fin > or as a tri fin? Riding it as a tri will give you quicker, more abrupt turns/carves. It’s more responsive, but not as smooth feeling as riding it single. Generally, if ever, I only use a tri setup in really steep, big, fast waves, when quick turns are critical. Side fins on a 9-6 also produce drag when paddling. Does the size matter for the center fin if I ride it as a > single or tri fin set up? It’s better to have a smaller center fin when combined with sidebites. If you use a fin that’s larger than, say, 8-inches, you’ll just end up with A LOT of drag. Hope this helps…deeb…

On my old classic, I liked two configurations. (1)Single 9" cutaway, or (2) trailers in the side positions with a 7.5" cutaway in the slot. However, boards, especially big ones, can have their own personality. My buddy had a weathered 9’4" that was just a total pig – road like a piece of plywood. We named it the “Manatee” since it was such a slug – skeched a picture of one on the nose to warn the uninitiated. One day, I jammed a big 'ol sailboard fin in that wrech just for fun. It was like Cinderella and the glass slipper! The board came alive and road like a champ. That experaince made me a fan of FCS and Boxes on longboards – sometimes a little tune’n, sometimes a lot, will lead to the holy grale of fin setups. Shine. http://users.leading.net/~shine
