A friend is considering buying an inexpensive Surftech. It’s inexpensive because the owner superglued the rear fin in (stripped the screw and, apparently, didn’t read the Futures site about how to fix that) and the side boxes have stripped screws (that’s an easy fix, no issue there). Is it possible to get it out without destroying the box? My friend would like to travel with the board and/or is afraid that if he snaps the fin, he’s toast and will have a twinnie on his hands. There is acetone (plastic destroyer, no?) and some stuff called Super Glue Remover. Even if that would work, how would it be possible to get it into the box?
Cut it off and route it out??? Not really sure. Bloody hell, superglued the fin in??. Maybe ring around ding repairers and get a quote to fix. Might be easier than you think, and he might end up with a cheap board that's been professionally repaired.
Sheild the area around the fin to protect the board itself and put some heat on it with a heat gun. Slow and easy. Keep applying heat off and on. Put it on then back off. The glue will soften up and you will be able pull the fin out.
Super glue is not so super. I would assume that you could gingerly tap the fin on all sides and get it to release from the box. I would try that first before cutting or routing anything. -f that doesn’t work…whack it a bit harder.
I had a similar problem with somethig…can’t remember what. Drilled small holes on either sides of the stuck parts, squirted solvent in, waited…did the shimy-shimy, back and forth…out it came. Cheap board ?..flip board fin down, stand behind tail with chain saw…no, no…with drill, chucked with a bit somewhat thinner than the fin base (not too thin), and maybe 6"+ long…so that you can line up the bit 90 degrees to where it would intersect with the part of the box that would let you push/pivet the fin out. CAREFULLY feel your way through the board, through the box…a little fin base damage is acceptable. Then tap tap tap…with removed bit and hammer. Easy little hole to fix…or fire up chain saw. Good luck
Howzit Ripcurl, I think I might try using a chisel and just put it where the gap between the fin side and the box are and just tap the chisel and see if that breaks the glue bond. Do it on both sides of the fin and hope the guy didn't use a lot of glue. Don't they make a chemical that you can use to get superglue off things, that might work also. Aloha,Kokua

Thanks for all the responses - that last one was really funny. Seems as though the owner was holding back a bit. The little tabs at the rear of the Futures boxes are gone in two of the boxes (the one the fin is glued in and one of the sides. So, basically, it needs two new boxes). That’s relatively simple. Just going to call the repair guy and ask how much. I think the purchase price of the board just got a LOT cheaper.
That is so funny Ripcurl, sounds like something my father would have done. He drove a 4" nail in the wall to hang a calender on once. That picture of the hammer looks good and maybe hit it forward or backwards as you would assume the glue would all be on the sides ?
