Certain phenomenal athletes have created a bit of hype about really small boards so I’ve made myself a 5’4’’ and soon to finish a 5’8’’ biscuit/pod/disc thing.
Given that the board is so short and has a 15’’ tail at 1’ up, if I toe the fins in at my usual 2’’ off the noes its a pretty serious toe-in, will it be too loose with not enough drive?
For a board which will be fairly loose anyway would it be better to have a fin placement similar to my 6’0’'?
Yes, try looking at the rails curve and extend that to a more pinny nose. This way you find a point where the nose would have been if it were a shortboard. From here use your proven placement rules.
i think the important thing to think about is having adjustability as a main option when dealing with new shapes etc...
Every board is different, even off CNC machines, there's just too many contributing processes and factors that makes each board different in it's feel and performance.
if u can, i'd suggest trying 4 ways (www.4wfs.com) in this board, u can change your toe from 2" to 3+" if u need to, u can change the splay/cant too if u want... as well as spread the fins apart or cluster too...
either way, your fin placements are all relative not only to the width of the tail, but how much "lift"/rocker u have and bottom shape (ie concave/vee/flat) etc....
I meant to say that I found out that for small boards with a super wide nose the rail is more leading for fin tow and placement than the centerline of the board, because the fin holds the rail at the right angle in the water.
Thanks guy, I think I might try get a hold of some adjustable fin systems. Puting a set in my standard board would teach me a lot about fin placement and how things work.
