finbox w/sidebites placement on a 7'6"

Greetings all! New guy here, sooooo stoked to have found this discussion forum!

I am currently working on a 7’6" funboard shape and would like to have a fin box with sidebites fin setup. I’ll be using futures for the sidebites. Are there standard measurements/configurations for this? Anyone have some good recommendations?

Thanks!

Depends… my favorite answer!

My tris are around 5" for the tail fin and 13.5 for the front sides.

My funboard is like 6" for the tail fin and 14.5 for the sides…but when I ride it as a twin, the sides get moved back to 13.5 from the tail.

But everything would depend on the template curve, the amount of tail rocker, the profile thickness, what YOU want to do with that board, your size, the wave sizing, plus more stuff.

Also, you didn’t state your fin sizing, both the sides and the trailer!

Thanks for the thought provoking details. I wish I could give you as specific details as you listed, but here’s what I got:

The template is based on the “Hawaiian Outline” shape from liddlesurfboards.com. Think elongated eggplant with a rounded squash tail.

I’m 160lbs. and plan on riding this board in small to head-high surf in town, up country, where ever it’s breaking. Pretty much all over! That’s why I want to have a center fin box with futures on the sides to allow for various fin configurations. I would like to be able to ride it as a single, a twin, or a thruster, depending on conditions.

I know it’s a very broad range, but I guess I’m asking if there are any general guidelines for setting up a 2 + 1 fin configuration like I have in mind. For example, I’ve heard that generally speaking, for a thruster fin setup , it’s 3.25" from tail for the trailing fin, and 11" from tail for the sides, with a 1/8" toe-in.

So, would you say your setup of 6" for trailing fin and 14.5" for the sides is a “general” setup (also, what is the toe-in on your sides)? Or is that something you specifically tweaked for yourself?

My first tri is a Plumeria 8’er.

My custom 6’8"er has tail fin right at 4.5" up from the tail (trailing edge).

My fun is a Bic.

My tri Bic is 4" up from the tail, sides at 13".

on my mini longboards in the 7’ to 8’ range I place the back fin box at 5" and the side fins 14.5" with a 1/4" toe-in. pic is of a 7’-6" and a 7’-8"

That looks like the setup I want! Thanks!
