finish on "wall hangar boards"

i know this is dicussed out there somewhere, but would acrylic finish over sanded hotcoat work as a gloss on a board that was going on a wall?? and how well would it polish up? i am making a few for a company, and i dont want to have to get them gloss coated. thanks!!

I’d use polyurethane 2 pac, same as the stuff they put on wood flooring.

No polishing needed, really shiny finish and will last forever.

Hope this helps.

cheers

I have method of getting a nice gloss with acrylic floor finish…it looks good but never as good as at true resin gloss and polish job… If you are doing work for someone ( a company) that is going to be seen by lot of people I would think that you would want those boards to represent some of your best work. If so I 'd go with the resin gloss and polish IMO. or are you trying to cut cost?

Ben.

I’ve used auto acrylic topcoat clear on some restorations with good results. Very easy to polish to a high gloss. 600, 1200 wet and dry then machine polish. From memory I think I sanded to 320 before applying the undercoat. I would sand to at least 320 before applying the clear over a hotcoated finish.

On the down side. It burns easily if you run the buff at high revs. But the burns rub out with 1200. It takes a long time to cure to a hard surface. I leave them a week or two before polishing. Even after a few weeks curing it still scratches easily. But how many scratches would a wall hanger receive?

The restorations mentioned were finished with acrylic only because they were painted with acrylic paints. Normally I gloss the regular way. To get a good finish with acrylic you need to sand to a fine grade. Sand a little more and you are ready to polish the resin finish.
