I’m looking to knock the yellow out of the epoxy I’m using with the use of finish spray. I was thinking of white acrylic latex mixed with Future floor polish to make it a little more translucent. The reason for the translucence being to let my logos show through reasonably well. Silly idea?
Hey deanbo,
Is the epoxy you use yellowish to begin with, or are you trying to prevent yellowing?
JSS
It’s yellowish to begin with.
Deanbo,
That’s going to be tough. You see, no matter what you do on top of the epoxy, you cannot add the colors necessary to let your logos show through as if the epoxy were clear. Does that make sense? Since the light that goes through the epoxy to reflect off your logo has already had color subtracted from it, it is impossible to add that color with a coating on top of the epoxy.
But, if you don’t mind a more washed out look to your logos, your idea of spraying a very thinned out white will brighten the board, but dim the logo, as if you ‘white-washed’ the entire thing. Also, you will have to use very good spray technique in order to get a uniform color throughout, without ‘tiger stripes’.
If you want your logos to show through well and brighten the board at the same time (and protect the epoxy from UV), paint the whole thing solid white and reapply the logos before a clear gloss coating of some sort. You can mask off the stringer(s) so that you can still see them, as the yellow color of the epoxy is usually not that objectionable on top of wood, it can actually make it look better, like it was stained that way on purpose…
Whatever you decide, can you show us pics before and after?
Good luck, I hope it turns out well.
JSS
Yeah, I was considering spraying an opaque white over the sanded resin and then screen printing my logos on after (if that’s possible) and then applying clear acrylic. Either way, I’ll keep you posted.
Hey man,
What epoxy are you using?
you probably know about them, but check out Gemco Gemrez 2:1 ot Adhesive Technologies resins using the ADH 26 or ADH 28 hardeners. (the ADH 24 is faster, but yellow)
The Gemco stuff it the clearest NZ made product available, and the Ad Tech stuff is well proven, and a good price.

Don’t know why your epoxy is yellow to begin with, but you just can’t beat 2 pac auto paint. It will kill you dead in your tracks, as well as anyone or thing in range of your sprayer. But the finish is ultra light, durable, non fading, and comes in a rainbow of colors. Just think surftech. If your good with your gun and or know how to color sand and buff you can blow doors on any poly gloss job.
I used the ATL stuff. Nice to work with but a tad yellow. Where can you get the Gemco stuff from?
atl goes yellow
i get my resin in 20 liters and hardner in 1 liters
so it doest go so yellow
just remember clear resins are up to 4 times the price and a lot thicker and bubbly
they still go yellows eventually
personaly i reckon fcuk it
use a tint and logo over the top
gotta make your own path with this stuff
no precendents
unless you wanna pay big dollars for cosmetics
which kinda makes it a mugs game dollar wize
Makes you laugh doesn’t it?
yeah well you gotta do it for love eh
im pretty keen to use poly uv cure over the top of my composite blanks
and only use the epoxy on the inside
epoxy looks good over wood anyway though
but to get the firewire look you need RR or kinetics
honestly there is so much misinformation out there
i think yellow is a good alternative to other boards looking like golf balls after three days
would like to try the gemco stuff though
Gemco are based at the Mount http://www.gemco.net.nz
Their Auckland stockist is New Zealand Fibreglass http://www.nzfibreglass.co.nz/
Dunno about the rest of the country, give Gemco a call. They are helpful, and they surf too.
NZ Fibreglass charge $65 for 1.5 litre kit, but if you buy more they can do it quite a bit cheaper.
Only one hardener speed though.
Kit
therein lies the problem
adr is only around 20$ a litre or less when you buy it in 20 litre drums
AND IS BASICALLY AS GOOD AS ANYTHING ON THE MARKET
it wets out great, doesn’t bubble much, doesn’t stink, plenty of time, no blush, sands well
and is actually pretty clear if your hardeners fresh
just use tints if your really concerned
