Finished 3rd Balsa Board

During last weeks photo embargo I finished up board number 3 - a tandem (sort of). I’m really happy with how it rides although I felt like I needed to relearn how to surf. There’s no muscling this thing around. Its 11’3", egg rails all the way till the last foot or so, and around 4 inches thick. Now I’m the fasted paddler on th beach  . It has balsa rails and bagged on skin and glass.

That’s one big mama board. How much does it weigh? How much weight do you expect it to carry, riding double?

My 10’3" x 24" x 4" (a triple stringer clark 10-3, barely shaped) could carry me (240#, then) plus one daughter (80#) and that was about it. But we did get lotsa waves. I rode it myself on some slightly overhead clean waves, but not by choice.

It weighs 22 lbs (it has more glass than 2 boards would need) and its super floaty. I can stand on it in totally flat water. I caught a couple head high waves today at SanO and it was a blast. I weigh 168 so it takes a lot mor finesse than I’m use to.

Dude:

That is so nice. I remember how much work it was to do my first balsa. That’s a lot of work. I started with a chambered blank from Equador. J. Vicenete finished shaping it after I cut out the plane shape. Glassing was fun but I used resin to seal the blank which made the board too heavy. It’s a great wall hanger and now resides in some rich dude’s Polynesian wall display. We made two more after that one. I got the balsa crave out of my blood or perhaps a balsa gun…

what a beauty. Nice work my friend.
