I just finished shaping my first board and i have a few ?'s about glassing(feel free to give comments about the board) I am 13 and live in New Jersey would it be easier for me to get in glassed by someone, (who and any information about them) or do u think i could do it by myself. Is it easier than shaping and i can i learn from Glassing 101? Thanks for any comment and Thank SWAYLOCKS for all the help.
If you don’t have experience working with these chemicals, and considering your age and knowledge level, I would recommend having the board professionally glassed. It can also be a tremoundous mess to deal with. Ask at your local surf shop. Most shops are more than willing to refer you to the right people. If not, you don’t need to give them your business.
Once you find a glasser, ask him to show you the shop and give you a walk through of what they do. The actual process is too long for you to hanging around for a whole board but they should be able to show you the different stages of different boards. Ask about do’s & dont’s. Polyester resin, catalyst, and acetone are very dangerous and need to be handled properly so be careful!
Glassing 101 will give you a good idea of what to do but for the rookie, it’s unrealistic to think that the job is as easy as the video makes it out to be. That’s why I recommend having it done by a professional, at least until you gain more experience working with the materials. Fixing your own dings is great way to start.
Keep up the work. If you have the place to glass it and the parents have no problem give it a try. SrPato makes some VERY GOOD points about going to a pro and looking at the process. He also has said domething about the materials used. They are not something to be taken lightly! They will hurt you if you are not careful. On the brighter side. When you ride your FIRST BOARD the experience is like no other. Someone on this forum once said and probably still does" That’s my opinion take it for what it is worth"
