Finishing my first board

Hey guys!

Im currently purchasing an 8’4 SMS blank from WNC and I’m going to shape it myself. This will be my first board and I just wanted to know what else I should know. WHat tools am I going to need? and also, once it is done being shaped, how do you finish it (resin, etc). Thanks so much for the support! -Ryan

rmsbvs,

this question gets asked at least every other week.

not to be rude or turn you off 'cause learning about this stuff is what Sways

is all about… but, try doing a search for things like “first board” or “tools needed”

or “minimum tools” or ???. i’m sure most, if not all, of your questions will be

answered if you just spend some time searching through the archives. after you

spend some time in there, and still have more q’s, i’m sure any # of knowledgable

people on this site will be more than happy to answer them for you.

thanks Chris, sorry about that !

nothing to apologize about,

there’s just A LOT of info in there…

a lot of people don’t know that they can search for old threads…

looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

So what’s a good site to buy surfboard blanks from? I wanted just a rectangular piece to shape myself, i noticed that some come pre-cut thats not what i wanted. thanks

…there s no more a chunk of PU foam

but you can obtain a chunk (billet) of PS foam

then hot wire the rocker (with rocker templates as guide) and hotwire if you ll put a stringer or more than one

-if you are looking for a complicated way you can still do this without hotwiring nuthin

so, use your electric planer and start to carve

follow some protocol; like first do the rocker then put the desire thickness (the PS has the same density in all the billet)

from deck, etc

-you should use epoxy resin to prevent from melting the PS foam

with or without stringer and rocker

try Foamez

with stringer
