Finning a Big Butt

My dad and I have a new project underway, and we’re debating the fin setup. Below is a screenshot of the board. Dimensions will be 8’0" X 23". The tail is 19", and at the rear corners 14". FAT ASS.

I’m building this as an experimental board for our local point break–lots of volume and wide tail for paddling and planing speed, but also short enough to fit in a car.

I argue for a 2+1 setup. We both like to surf singlefins, but with the wide tail I think some tiny sidebites (the 2.5" fins) would help the board hold while still maintaining its singlefin feel. I, however, enjoy surfing from the center of the board off the rails.

My dad votes for a quad fin setup. I would think that the quad fins might be a bit too loose—with all that tail and no cut out area, the rear will have a lot of buoyancy. The more I notice though, my dad likes to surf from the rear of the board, and surfs with drawn out lines, so  a quad setup could actually work.

What are your opinions? Which would you prefer? Should I just load an armada of fin boxes on the board and try everything?

Not a bad idea. How would you set the board up initially?

Hey, this will work with trailers or not. Back in '86 made a "butterfly" fin (the truster just hit) years later I buy this photo of Velsy and dooo, never ever though it was done before, what'a dope! Anyhow they work very good, however a bitch to get right! Velsy produced the fin to fit Fins Unlimited style boxes. Check 'em out @http://www.surfboardsbyvelzy.com/

Aloha.

If you want to experiment with what fin set-up will serve the board best

you’ll put boxes in it as you choose. Otherwise Ambrose is da-man.
