Fins that don't slice your skin!?

and instead of going in 6" [like my twin fin did] …they go in 8-10" deep , and sever the femoral artery . And I would have died .

This was the first time in my life I was actually glad I WASN’T riding my big ol’ single fin …

ben

or you could’ve missed it entirely. death will come when your time is up. until then, when it comes to matters of extreme pain and possible loss of left nut, i’ll chance it.

A couple of years back, I recall an ad for some tape that could be put on fin edges. It looked like a thin, high density foam with scalloped edges so it would bend around curves. The ad featured a kid showing some stitches like Proteck’s ad.

Awesome!! Thanks PeteC.

Do you know if that tape is still available to buy?

The coated FCS fins sound interesting. I suppose the backyarder might do something similar with “Tool Dip” or an elastomeric roof coating like, “Kool Seal,” but that would make the fin thicker. I prefer to simply blunt the fin with wet-dry sandpaper.

Some years ago there was a guy at Sunset Cliffs that finned himself, and he bled to death before he could get back to his car. A coworker of mine finned himself in his belly on wallout wipeout. It cost him $1500.00 at the emergency room, because he didn’t have insurance. The cost of six surfboards at the time. Jerp City!

Consider how much drag you get by blunting your fins compared to how much drag you get by hauling a round leash cord through the water.
