just got the shaping 101 video, didnt quit get the fin placement thing??? are there normal measurements as to where to put 'em or do you take measures off of a board you alredy haveor what??? Mr. T
if you are making a similar board to one you already have, use those fin #'s for reference…look at your friend’s board…see what they have…or let us know what your making, maybe someone can help
dont know what i’m making, was just curious if there was a rule of thumb for the fin placements(tri-fin) and will more than likely use FCS. maybe they have a template, I dont know, like I said i’m supernew… Mr.T
4" maybe, but I dont know what kind of tail you are shaping or how long your board is etc, etc…You going single, tripple or quad ? http://www.geocities.com/wunderboyi/ninetysixpercent.html
go for this as posted by Jim from lokbox: Under 6’10": 3 1/8 to 3 1/4 from tail for back fin. 10 and 3/4 to 11 1/4 from tail for side fins… just depends 1 in. from rail on side fins with 1/4 in. toe in, and 8 degrees cant for single concave, 7 for doubles, 6 for flats, and 5 for panel vee’s. http://www.surfboardglassing.com
What would the placement be for a longboard tri-fin set up be? Using a box and two small side fins? Board around 8’6"?
Well, i’m no shaper, but thanks surflab…i’m flattered. It’s just a generalization from the shortboards I see. I have adjustable fins in my boards, so I usually try to find a “central” location for my marks. Usually it’s where the shaper marked it, then I can go up or back from there 1/4 in. Seems the front fins were up a bit further in the early 90’s, like 11" or 11 1/4". Maybe they changed for the new rockers these days!?
