for this board, small wave shorty. stubbie maybe? going to keep a load of volume to make it easy to paddle and hopefully a mush beater! though i’ll be moving soon to bristol for you UK ers, north devon and south wales on my doorstep it’d be nice to work in more than mush…
Just cut and sanded the outline, 6’6, 21" (center), 15" (foot from tail), 16" (foot from nose)
i was thinking of a quad fin set up but looking at it now it could work with a single? or 2
+1. i could loose an inch or so to gain some width in the tail
just as a note i’ll be making and glassing the fins onto this one, cost cutting forces it upon me! looking forward to it
As I pulled down from nose to tail I was going to say quad up till the bottom 1/3. I’d go with big 5-1/4" Twin sides and a small trailer for that paticular shape. But, that’s just my opinion.
i did mark up the outline with a view of making it into a quad but i think i’ve pulled the tail in a little too much. still thinking about loosing an inch or so to get some width back
There’s a lot more than considering outline when it comes to choosing a fin set-up. The board looks to me like a single fin. If you surfing over the sand a Starfin might be the best call.
That looks like an inflated version of a board my friend had, his was 6’2" 20.5". It was a retro single with really nice beefy down rails, slight v, rideable in everything from knee to double overhead NJ. I really wish I had bought that board when he sold it.
have just finished shaping now, wow its so much easier with a planer!
in the end i’m going with the popular opinion of a single fin
ordered the box and also some fcs plugs to stick along side for more options
while shaping i lost an inch off the tail but have rounded it out so more of a rounded squash now. i wasnt happy with how the original tail shaped up. i also heard the call for down rails? well down rails we have! really looking forward to getting this board glassed and in the water now…
pics to follow i promise
just a couple more question about the fins, how far up should i put the box? and anyone got ideas for side fin placements?
just a quick update, almost finished the glassing, just got to pop the leash plug in (i forgot earlier!) then wet and dry the whole thing to 1200 then we’re good to go! cheers guys for all the help, i went for a 10.5" fin box in the end with a 7" fin. also got a load of fcs plugs so i can retrofit some sidebites if i so fancy
so here we go, the finished shape
looks way too thick but thats all in the angle. at the thickest this is 2 3/4" and at the rear the fin box almost popped through the deck! was a close one
and the bottom.
i went against the advice of many here and slapped on an opaque hot coat… this was to cover up my botched attempts of putting colour in the lam! well the lam actually went ok, any mishaps were purely aestetic but i just wasnt happy with it. my solution was to grind the crap out of the laps until i couldnt feel them with my eyes closed then lay on a thick hot coat of the same colour. thankfully i’d gone with an opaque colour in the lam so i figured this should be pretty safe. after a bit of sanding there are places where you can catch a glimpse of whats underneath, its not totally perfect but looks a damn site better than what was there before!
I’m making a similar board, and I was thinking of making it pretty flat. Your board seems to have quite a bit of rocker-what did you put in for nose rocker? Nice shape.
