Normally…I wouldn’t remember…but I’m a fan. Not as good a writer as Leonard Cohen…but easier on the ears.

you going to cobra aug 7? say hi to ze germans… they should be zere zat week alzo…

Silly,

Looks to me that you get it. Definately a racist African American stereotype and probably intended as an insult. The charactor Otay represented the general views of white America at that time. Funny shows by the way. Just have to remember the time frame it represented. Mike

Buckwheat was a character played by Billie Thomas in the Our Gang/Little Rascals films. Thomas’ character was imitated in the 1980’s by Eddie Murphy in a controversal comedy skit on Saturday Night Live.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Gang

“Our Gang, also known as The Little Rascals or Hal Roach’s Rascals, was a series of American comedy short films about a group of poor neighborhood children and the adventures they had together.”

“The four black child actors who held main-character roles in the series were Ernie “Sunshine Sammy” Morrison, Allen “Farina” Hoskins, Matthew “Stymie” Beard , and Billie “Buckwheat” Thomas. Ernie Morrison was, in fact, the first black actor signed to a long-term contract in Hollywood history,[4] and was the first major black star in Hollywood history as well. [5]”

I have no idea what MB intended by his reference. And whatever explaination he has given, well, I would take with a grain of salt, because it probably involves a lot of back peddling.

In my opinion the Our Gang films were brilliantly funny.

I’ve seen them all dozens of times and that did not make me a racist. There are problems with the humor in todays terms but the humor is genuinely funny in it’s own right. And none if the kids escaped the stereotyping. So everyone has to take a laugh, too. However, using the stereotypes for any purpose whatsoever outside of the films is very problematic.

And always will be.

On the other hand if MB had said Alfalfa I would have got it immediately. Even Greg would have to laugh at that. But MB didn’t. So we can only scratch our heads and wonder wtf?

Because it’s just not funny calling someone Buckwheat. (crickets)

OMG, I forgot about Eddie Murphy.

You left out SPANKY! Does anyone remember who played Spanky? It’s a shocker. None other than…Robert Blake. Yep, that Robert Blake. He also played Little Beaver, in the Red Ryder series of films.

EDIT: It has been gently pointed out to me that I was wrong about Blakes role in the Rascals. Spanky was played by Spanky McFarland. Blake WAS there, as the character Mickey. The senior moments are coming faster, and faster.

riiiiight

thanks for bringing me up to speed, i get it now

What hisss ?

F#*%king priceless !!

Hey Otay,

Genuine question -

How many labour hours are there in a Surftech?

Making the shift from sailboards to making surfboards with the same tech, i’d assume they really have their systems as tight as realistically possible.

Kit

  1. Greg Loehr represents epoxy expertise in the surf industry.

  2. MB refers to GL as “Buckwheat” compared to the guy he talked to in the epoxy manufacturing business.

  3. Buckwheat the T.V. star represented innocence and a naiveness of life. A simplistic but sensible out look on life.

  4. Buckwheat’s famous response to questions would be an affirming “OTAY”, meaning O.K. or yes.

  5. Mb’s comment comparing GL to Buckwheat was an insult to GL saying he has a simplistic and naive understanding of epoxy compared to this epoxy engineer MB is dating, I mean doing business with.

  6. My response to MB with the handle “OTAY”,that famous saying of Buckwheat, was my way to show that I understood the insult. MB ran with his tail between his legs and now loves epoxy except for RR brand. The moral being pride can keep you away from the best of the best epoxy materials.

  7. The story behind the story is that G L could talk to us all about his epoxy at the molecular level but he too has to know his audience. Most would understand it here but you have to keep the conversation very simplistic if you ever want to sell the stuff in New Zealand.

  8. At some of the explanations I have read I am scratching something too.

Alfalfa is a hard nickname to spell for mb and it wouldn’t have been an insult.

I am curious what you would have gotten from the comparison, and did alfalfa have any good phrases of wisdom like “otay” in case Ineed to change my handle?

  1. Lastly, when did New Zealand become the gate keeper for what’s funny or not? Get back to your bowel of crickets before they get too cold.

Bwahahahahah!!! Quote of the month. At least I wasn’t the only one getting creeped out.

This thing has been going on btwn Greg and Matt for years.

So far it’s Greg 3 Matt 1. The only thing Matt can do to beat Greg is not buy his resin which only counts for 1. Greg knows what he knows (on all levels) while Matt speaks only of what others know and that’s the main difference between an original and a copy.

For the anti pro crowd.

Copulation makes surfing crowded. The planet has limited renewable resources and we’re reproducing and consuming at a fatal rate.

Hate pro surfing as much as you want. Then thank pro surfing for advancing materials and designs across the full range of surfboards.

Personally, I’m no fan of Greg’s but he knows his stuff. My epoxy process is basically that which he developed. He’s done a ton of stuff w/epoxy and and is a good problem-solver. Credit where credit is due. Having said that, I still don’t use his resin for various reasons, but there’s lots to be learned from him besides.

BTW sailboards are manufactured at cobra currently. Cobra is cutting edge in the composite tech arena. You should see the carbon fiber components they make. I wouldn’t call it same tech as sailboards. Sailboards can be very complex in the composite design.

To answer your question

Twice as long as silly claims to make one of his boards but, 5 times faster than he actually takes. I hope this helps.

If you don’t count making the foam but from layup/button push to quality control inspector between 5-8 hours depending on the board. The total days would be at least 5 until QC can give it a thumbs up. Like fine wine, there is no hurry to do it right the first time with surftech.

Sorry you had to change your avatar twice in less than 24 hours this weekend.

A few Little Rascals trivia corrections:

George McFarland played Spanky. Robert Blake played Mickey.

It was actually Porky who was the one that said OTAY! not Buckwheat. Eddie Murphy appropiated it in his Saturday Night Live skit and it stuck.

Here’s a picture of Porky that you can use as new avatar if you wish.

Anyway enough of this sillyness lets get this thread back on topic.

So either MB called GL a pig (porky) then or my mistake about the otay reference probably made no sense to a person of average intelligence or higher?

I apologize to MB,

thank you for the correct avatar.

who is eddie murphy and what is saturday night live?

see you on the 7th

Not too impressed with your Thai phonetics Otay. Though I’m not too flash at them myself. If you know the manager of the Rip Curl factory up North PM me as he’s a good mate of mine. Tim at the opposition factory (Lampang) has a Triumph Thunderbird I sold him.
