Firewire demo day in San Francisco tomorrow 10/21

Wise SS at Ocean Beach, San Francisco is having a composites demo day tomorrow. All Surftechs & Firewires available to ride. http://www.wisesurfboards.com/ 9 am and just bring your wetsuit.

Swell should be fine. Its currently shoulder high or so with light offshores & clear sky. High tides around noon. Tomorrow’s forecast is for more of the same, with maybe a little added south push mixed in.

I can’t make it, I’m reffing my kid’s soccer game at 10 :frowning: But I’ll probably surf first…today & yesterday were just gorgeous.

If anyone can get out, it would be cool to read your opinions of surfing both a ST & a FW in the same waves…

I second benny’s last sentence !

As a mate of mine wants to buy one , he will DEFINATELY be interested in reading how they ride , from people here .

cheers

ben

Your reffing your kids soccer game? Isn’t that a conflict of interest? I’d like to file a formal complaint at this time! Nice heads-up Benny1. Wish I could make it. To the beach. Not the game. Mike

WOO HOO!!! i’m shooting for being there and i can’t wait!

thanks for the heads up Benny!

i’ll definitely post my opinions on Sways, and hopefully som pics too.

A 4ft@20sec south swell, oil slick glass, and a Fire Wire Board.

And I’m watching the kids while my wife is running the Pre school rummage sale.

Classic!!

Maybe I can talk BoB or Slow Dave into a demo later

Ian

…and , please … be sure to say hi to “LeeDD” for us , if he is sighted ?

cheers , and “goodnight” ! [it’s now 11.52pm saturday here in west oz ]

I went down to Wizers today and asked Dave how the demo went.

He said the feed back was all positive,(They were all ripping).

One of the Fire Wire boards snapped in 1/2, welcome to Ocean Beach.

The guy who broke the board wanted to buy one any way.

Just not that one.The FireWire guys told him not to sweat it.

They still had a 6’4", 183/4" by 21/2" that I could have tried.

I don’t surf boards under 7’ at OB much and the surf was head and 1/2+today.

So I took out a 7’ 21" by 3" Merrick Flyer, great session.

The Fire Wire board was heavier than some Surftechs. It looked like balsa rails and core cell deck feathered to the rail. With an hand made vent plug with a hole in it for the Gortex, more old school than the pictures.

Dave said it had stood up to a lot of abuse with no signs of wear.Next time I’ll have to make it to the demo!!

yes ,

  so.......

hi Chip and everyone,

i have been debating about wether or not i should write anything

because i don’t have much to report in regards to how the Firewire rode.

i finally decided to just write what i could…

i was the one who snapped the board.

i was super excited to try this board that i had heard/read so much about.

i told the Firewire rep, Chuy (spelling?), that my normal board was a 6’2" x 19"

and he hooked me up with a 6’2" x 18 3/4". the board felt really good under my

arm. light but solid. the finish on the board was better than 99% of the boards

that you see on the racks at any given surf shop. super clean.

the surf was epic for ocean beach. it was over head to 2x overhead on the sets,

offshore breeze, warm air and water, and most waves were barreling! WOO HOO!

actually, the first view i got when i came around the south end on Hwy 1 was of

an overhead set wave peaking and then it barreled and spat both ways. driving

up the beach towards Wise, i saw a guy walking with a longboard (mal for you

guys and gals down under) snapped in half.

after i checked the board out i quickly crossed Hwy1 and jogged across the beach to

paddle out. my photographer (fiance’) followed me and was setting up on the beach.

the thing paddled nice! and duck dove great. it seemed to have a lot more glide than

i was used to with my normal shortboard. it felt like i got more for every paddle than

i usually do.

the waves were really clean and you could line one up from way outside. the board

easily caught the first wave that i paddled for. an overhead barrel that was too fast

for me. the board made the drop really smoothly and continued smooth while i straightened

out into the flats and then ducked back under the white water.

5 or 10 minutes later, i was able to line up another one, this one a little bigger than the last.

i felt like i was a little too far from the peak but the Firewire just paddled so good!

as the wave jacked, i realized that it would be a late drop. kinda iffy. not wanting to

risk breaking the board, i pushed it to the side and dove down the face. i got pinned to

the bottom for a second and then was able to push off and come to the top. i pulled

the leash in and could not believe my eyes. i only had about a foot and a half of the

Firewire. i was so bummed. i felt horrible.

i know i didn’t land on the board so all i can figure is that it got stuck in the lip and

snapped at the bottom. walking back to the Firewire demo area, i felt like such a kook.

when i got closer, i realized one of the guys was clapping! i apologized over and over.

they were really cool about it and reasured me that everything was ok. they told me

that that was what demo boards were for. they just wanted to know how it had happened.

Chuy told me that he knew it was bound to happen given the surf and that he had

seen at least 4 other people with snapped boards that day.

so, for what it’s worth, for the maybe 3 seconds that i rode the board, it felt really

smooth. also, it paddled much better than most other standard shortboards that i have

ridden. i don’t think that much can be drawn from the fact that the board snapped.

the surf was pretty heavy. i have a few pix of waves from that day and 2 pix of the

snapped Firewire if anybody is interested. the Firewire rep said that they would be

having more demos coming up. i suggested to him that he put a post on Swaylocks when

they do and that there would be a bunch of people who would be interested in trying

one out.

i would still love to try one out. i’m really interested in the parabolic stringers. i really

want to just pump one down the line and see how it feels.

-Chris

Put the piccies up Chris…

Thanks mate…

Ahhhhhh! YES PLEASE!!!

Not being able to walk into a store and check one out in person is killing me!

Any chance of a close up of the internals?

Not that I want to cheat and copy or anythin…

Ocean Beach is heavy with some size, i’ll vouch for that as un unbiased foreigner.

I’m glad the are actually snappable, means I won’t be too suprised when I snap one of my own creations.

Awesome, nice one dude!

p.s. - anyone give LeeDD one to try ??

I got multiple calls from OB that day about how good the surf was…everyone loves to rub it in…

Surfers will tolerate pressure dings on their boards quite well, but they are EXTREMELY intolerant of snappage. Really, my point is, what kind of board does it have to be to break in 6-8 ft beachbreak? Breaking a nearly new 6’2" in that??

Like, $750 up in smoke.

Also, btw, don’t ditch in that position. Its the worst thing you could do for the board. Try to land the drop on your feet, if you are not stable, jump off to the side.

I’ve broken a lot of boards at OB, but the only one that broke in conditions like that was totally delammed already. And ugly.

Wish I had seen this post on the 20th because as we had some decent swell and decent conditions on the 21st and 22nd.

On the 22nd, the fog was hanging about 2 blocks deep from the ocean with nearly no wind and a marathon had closed down the main thoroughfare and parking lots.

Once you made it out through the lull/channel (which due to the fog was sometimes tough), overhead waves were coming through.

Homemade board #2 served me pretty well…now if only I could get those glass fins I paid for sent to me so I can remove the plastic ones I’ve got in now.

Oh yeah, blakestah said "Also, btw, don’t ditch in that position. Its the worst thing you could do for the board. Try to land the drop on your feet, if you are not stable, jump off to the side. "

I’ve tried to land such a drop on my feet more than once with not great results: 1) Went through a 7’10" Coletta…the jagged edges of the broken board scraped up the back of my head as the board snapped beneath my feet, and 2) Badly sprained my (front) ankle as a 7’6" Freeline buckled under me and when I rolled forward, I brushed the tip of the board with my noggin. Still, I am always glad I did try to land too late of a drop on my feet this one evening at Ft Point when I ripped two fins off a 7’2" Twinser on a not so submerged rock…

I’ve heared of that before . . . like surftechs have better small damage resistance (dings, hits etc) but their big damage resistance (snaps / buckles etc) is lower than poly u.

Wonder if firewires are plagued by that? take to the proving ground, HI.

Good review . . . so far most people that ride FW like them.

somewhat related…

saw a profile on Nev on Fuel TV the other day…he was talking about the new tech in his R&D area…showed a few things including the classic jump on the bottom trick. Too bad Bert wasnt involved. Nev said he’s no longer a shaper but with the help of technology, is now a designer - and designs can come from anyone.

Anyway, after a commercial break they had a FW session with Kelly and Taj in some sizable AU surf…as usuall Kelly was killing it…that guy is just a freak…while Taj wasnt as aggressive. The waves were bombing tho…TOH…Taj seems too light for power surfing.

Kelly - still the man. I didnt see anything out of the usuall relm…just great surfing by great surfers. I may have noticed the FWs were thinner and had less rocker…makes perfect sense to me.

I just seen that show myself, It was interesting. So it looks like the outer lam is layed up by hand on that regular ol’ glassing rack with the resin catch box. I guess I expected more… but it makes sense given the scale they are shooting for.

I agree on not having the man behind the tech more in the spotlight. Maybe he is not interested in being apart of the song and dance.

It’s cool to see the top guys on them, lends some validation to the hype. They should do well if they can get these boards into the shops.

It seems to me that the production versions are not that unattainable for the willing. There is still the mystery of what is really put into them, keeps it exciting…

Craftee, didn’t you make a core-cell skinned board way back when? If so, where did you get the core-cell in florida.

Josh

I just got my firewire today from california I live in florida and have been following Berts board technology on this forum for a long time and this is my first post on this site and it is a great site for info on the latest the firewire board was the easiest and closest thing to a sunova I could get so I bought one I will post a return on how the board rides tommorrow. the board is a 5 10 performance shortboard called the flexfire the workmanship on the board is excellant it is all white I can’t wait to try her out anyways later

Photos?

Pretty please?

Thought i’d bring this thread to the front again, keen to see those snaps! (foto snaps and board snaps too!)

You must be one of only a handful of people world wide who have broken a firewire - be proud!!

Surfercross, amy thoughts on your new pleasure machine?

Photos as well?

Cheers!

Kit

i haven’t forgotten…

sorry for the delay, my truck took a major dump and i’ve been dealing with that.

i’ll post them this evening.
