First attempt at ply fins

Here are a few pics of my first attempt at ply fins. It’s really my second i suppose, as i did one from 6mm ply, but it was a bit thin. These are 1/2 inch, but i took a few layers down, and they are more like 3/8 at the thickest part. Any pointers, advice, criticism is welcome and appreciated. The base has been thinned down on one of them, as the finbox i have is 8mm wide, so im planning on filing, or sanding them down to 4mm. Then, using a mould i’ve made up, i’ll resin on a base. Fingers crossed!

good work beerfan they look amazing. What sort of board are you going to use them on?

They will be the leading fins on my quad fish. The double foiled rear canards are going to be a little bit trickier, but im stoked at the way these are going, they look o.k for a first attempt i reckon. Thanks mate!

Could anybody tell me roughly what the foil should be like on the rear canards??, like, where should the thick part be, at the front like regular fins??, and thin or thick??

Those are lookin good, beerfan. Future boxes? Mike

Actually, i dont really know. I want something easy to install, so im thinking just plain old screw and pin style side bite boxes, they are wider than fcs, so i’ll have thicker and longer tabs, which i think will be stronger. Plus, i can get 6inch long boxes, so i can jus t loosen the screw, and adjust the fins up or down the box.

Just another foil photo, mainly for ben!. Still need a little work, especially around the tip, but getting there.

thanks Mark !

I think it is the 8" , 10 , and 12" multi fins boxes which are the same depth , mate …

be aware that the ?6? / ?7"? boxes are shallower than the others.

What this means is , if you ever want to buy the multi fins fins or fcs finbox fins for your boxes , the 8" ones will be the right depth for them .

[The 8" box also has the advantage of a couple of extra inches ‘fore and aft movement’ for the fins .]

This I found out the hard way , installing the too shallow boxes in my ill-fated , stringerless "benzer bottom " board last year …

Well, I just thought that might be worth mentioning , before you buy them Mark …

 cheers mate !
